The name O’Rourke evolved from the Gaelic name “O’Ruaire” and, for a period in Irish history, the O’Rourke’s were one of the great noble families of Ireland.
There are several reasons why the name O’Rourke is perfect for this Irish pub. O’Rourke is an Irish name with ancient roots,
providing the same authenticity and tradition that permeates the atmosphere. Throughout the pub there are vintage artifacts from Ireland as well as themed sections that represent several different styles of authentic Irish pubs.
The O’Rourke motto “Serviendo Guberno,” translates to, “I Govern by Serving.” This motto highlights some of the core values that the Pub holds dear. First, it demands us to consistently provide our customers with impeccable service by demonstrating warmth, graciousness, and efficient, personalized service. Next it calls us to provide a friendly and positive atmosphere for both our guests and employees. Finally, it reminds us to give back to our community, and consistently strive to improve the quality of life for those in South Bend.
The O’Rourke family has a Gaelic motto as well, “Buagh”, meaning victorious. This motto reflects the confident and successful attitude that is ingrained in the Notre Dame tradition. Our proximity to campus and constant contact with its students, staff, and alumni demands that we embody the same attitude as well. The Notre Dame Victory March is one of the most recognizable collegiate fight songs, which celebrates Notre Dame’s winning tradition, and inspires pride and nostalgia. In the same way, O’Rourke’s will become a tradition of the Notre Dame community, and will help support and celebrate each one of their many victories.
