About

Come to Nortown for our trusted quality meats and selection. Come back for great food ideas and personal service.

Story

In January of 1960, Mike Klein, with the encouragement of his wife Agnes opened the door to Nortown Meat Market, a small butcher and fish shop on the north side of Eglinton just west of Bathurst, in Toronto. A butcher by trade, he began the business with a commitment toward friendly, personal service, and the highest quality products at a great price. As years went on, Nortown added homemade prepared foods, deli, and a selection of grocery and specialty food items.

In 1972, the store doubled in size, and took on the name, Nortown Foods Ltd. Business continued to grow and in 1977, a second location was added at York Mills & Bayview. The movement north of younger Jewish families prompted the 1987 opening of the Promenade location.

Nortown is truly a family business. Early on, Mike's wife Agi, a driving force in the business, also worked at the store as a bookkeeper and cashier. While growing up, and going through school, all three of Mike's children worked part-time in the stores. They learned their father's work ethic by serving at the counters, stocking shelves, delivering orders, and working as cashiers. In 1982, Brian joined his dad, Mike, full-time in operating the Nortown stores. In 1990 Mike's daughter Marilyn, again encouraged by Agi, established So Delicious Inc., a manufacturer of premium prepared foods. Since then Marilyn joined the family business and now oversees the production of all Nortown prepared foods. This division now produces over 200 products. For the past few years, Mike's grandchildren, in between going to school, can also be found working in the family business.
More than fifty years later, the company is still being operated with the same underlying philosophy, and has grown into one of the most respected specialty food retailers in the city. Nortown's customer base has grown to include the children and grandchildren of the original patrons.

I come to this location maybe once or twice a week and the service is great until yesterday afternoon. I bought a jar of Vegetable Soup and it was very difficult to open, my friend and I spent a lot time trying to open it and decided to give up. I went back to the store and had told them about it. Few of them tried to open it, one was wearing gloves and one of the cashiers didn't. They had asked someone in the back to open it probably the 3rd person touched my soup and while that was happening, I asked one of the cashiers who wears glasses if I could get a new one and she said no and that a lot of customers come back and help them open it, if that was the case how come they don't fix the issues? She said you would have to speak to the manager so I said Ok let me speak to the manager, she said "oh he just left" frustrated, i left the store and because I didn't like the way it was handled I called the store and I spoke to Paula who is a part time manager so the cashier lied about having a manager in the store she told me that I could come back and get a new one she wasn't friendly, I asked her why she sounded so angry and she told me she was wearing a mask Anyways, it wasn't about the soup, it was the way it was handled. I wanted to get a new one because so many of them touched it, they don't know where I live, I had to come back with my baby in the stroller. It was just a lot of hassle and the customer service was terrible and now I have to come back again for the second time? If only the cashier let me speak to the part time manager I could have had my soup then. I am not going back to get a new one even though they offered. I am not coming back to this store again, it's disappointing. Never again.
This Nortown on Eglinton W has been my main grocery for over 30 years. Best assorted sandwiches in Toronto egg, tuna, salmon chicken tarragon etc. Top quality meats, poultry, fish. Very good desserts from Robert's,Phipps, Duffle etc. Best BBQ chicken, breaded sole fillets, vegetables and salads in cold deli. They have milk, butter, eggs and nice assortment of cheeses so a one stop shop.if you like. Helped raising 3 grandkids with most scrumptious breads, baked goods, cookies at different price levels. I moved away from area months ago but still.order much food for delivery. Hat's off to wonderful quality and service which LRT didn't diminish. I knew the original owner/Mike a real mensch and obvious influence on his descendents in the business. Thank you Nortown. My grandkids thank you too.
I must write to thank Nortown for the easiest and best Passover Seder I ever hosted. I ordered my complete meal from their Eglinton location. Every dish was delicious and I was so proud to serve them. My guests agreed as they devoured everything. Sweet gefilte fish, matzah ball soup, Boneless Turkey breast, Roasted brisket, honey garlic chicken thighs, and yummy sides. Their apple & raisin farfel Kugel is out of this world; more like a dessert. My order was ready when I arrived to pick it up. A lovely young man happily carried the box to my car. Aside from the fact I could never cook like that, who has to? With Nortown as my cook, all I have to do is the dishes. Thank you Nortown.
Had the chopped fish I needed. Can't ask for more than that.
Love their baked goods and breads. Fresh meats and fish are top quality. A good selection of prepared foods make it a convenient stop when you're not sure what to prepare for dinner. Nortown also carries a wide assortment of sauces, soups and marinades. A good place to grab lunch on the fly too! Always friendly and helpful staff. Holiday menus available.
I needed some items but had a big baby stroller with me that would not be easy to get into the store. I called them and they very kindly let me pay over the phone and then brought the items out to me once I arrived. Amazing service, the gentleman was wearing a mask, and I will definitely be coming back! Thank you!
Great foods, but very mediocre service. During my visit, the butcher was very helpful, but all the other staff were lackadaisical. For instance, they didn't know or claimed not to know whether I could have some ice to chill my purchase. Another customer also asked for ice, and got the same rebuff. For these prices, the service should be much better!
It's a nice shop. Not a great variety as it is not big, but has good selection of cooked meals. Also, prices are a big high. Friendly personnel, which I really appreciate.
I feel the reviews for this aren't really fair. This is a specialty Kosher Grocery Store specializing in that market, and they do a great job! But if you just walked in off the street, not knowing that and the restrictions that a Kosher grocery has, it would seem less appealing compared to other groceries. If you are looking for great Kosher products this is the place to go!
Over the past few years the attitude displayed by staff has become intolerable. I often shop in the deli section and early in the morning the selection is lacking. I’m told that the truck has not yet arrived. Obviously, the new management of this company is lacking in skills. Please bring back the service and full shelves that made this a 5 star deli.
