Neechi Commons

About

Neechi Commons: one-stop shopping in the North End. Groceries, full service meat department, indigenous-inspired restaurant, art gallery/gift store & more!

Story

Neechi Foods Coop Ltd. started as a pilot project in the mid 1980's. Eventually opening a small store located at 325 Dufferin Avenue, Neechi Foods became a "social enterprise" - promoting community economic development and environmental sustainability.

In 2011, the ambitious project of starting a greater commons began. Neechi Foods, with the help of the government and other social enterprise development organizations & banks, raised the necessary capital to buy the old "California Fruit Market" building on Main Street.

With the ambitious project needing more space, Neechi Foods also purchased the neighbouring building, combined the two and renovated these historical buildings.

Implementing geothermal heating/cooling, natural skylights, natural lighting with fibre optics and much more; Neechi Commons won awards for it's brilliant efforts in environmental sustainability. Even today, Neechi Commons promotes cycling to work by providing showers, lockers and much more to its employees.

Today, Neechi Commons consists of a congolemeration of sustainable businesses containing the Three Sisters Courtyard (fresh fruits & vegetables), meats/deli, grocery, Kookum's bakery, a restaurant, catering and even beautiful office space within it's 30,000 sq. ft. facility.

Tomorrow, Neechi Commons still has lots of room to grow! Eventually, all space within Neechi Commons will be filled up, an addition will be added and we even have the potential to turn the Dufferin Avenue location into a commercial kitchen that will mass-produce specialty foods or strictly have catering.

Neechi Foods Coop Ltd. is a worker owned and operated coop. This means, workers own equity into the company and that the profits go to those whom own equity. With Neechi's initiative of hiring within the Point Douglas, North End and Lord Selkirk Park communities, this means profits are put back into the community.

Super cute place I love that its not so commercial like every other store. We definitely stocked up on some Bannock all though two blueberry buns didnt even make it home they were so good! :
It is practically an empty shell now with drunk or high people lying on any part of the floor asleep. There is a second hand store in the building as a second business and you have to step over people that are asleep just to get into the store. I will never go there again and would advise other people not to go to visit the Niche market anytime soon. I feel sorry the the owners of the second hand store there.
Update: Sadly this place is now closed. : This place is amazing! Everyone who can should come out Saturday June 30 2018 for one last meal before they close. This place has been a huge benefit to the community and it's so sad they're going to end up closing. There's an art gallery here that is really cool to see. There's a very nice restaurant on the second floor, it's serving a bunch of pretty cool things that you probably never tried before. And the grocery store has incredibly fair prices.
Decent grocery store with a good selection of food. Lots of fresh baked breads, smelled amazing. Upstairs there was a restaurant it was closed on Sunday and a little shop of some beautiful handmade Indigenous goods.
Recent price jump places this once affordable grocery store just below your big box store in prices. Although the staff is very friendly, you should not expect good customer service. Management runs it like a dollar store.
Way overpriced at the shop upstairs and I'm disturbed that they sell traditional medicines. Typically medicines were given in exchange for an offering and it bugs me they are selling things people can go get for free if they had no barriers to do so. Staff is nice but not very helpful.
Good place to get good meat. We often get the butcher to cut us some nice tenderloin steaks. Prices for meat are much better than places like Walmart or Sobeys
One shop keeper 'white profiled' me hahah. Grocery staff pleasant enough. Artisan crafts upstairs and the staff are pleasant. The restaurant is upstairs and good food at reasonable prices. Known for more indigenous/homestyle meals
***Business is closed*** Alright selection. Prices are good. Has most basics with frozen, meat and deli with fruit sections. Meat packs weren't the best quality, pretty fatty stuff.
Good restaurant with good food and friendly staff. The gift shop is gorgeous, too. There's a really nice fashion boutique and grocery store downstairs. Lots of free parking.
