It's been 30 years since I hiked this trail we weren't expecting several inches of snow so crossing the rocks before the summit didn't happen but we did enjoy the spectacular views. I gave it 4 stars because they really need to maintain the road up to the parking lot!
Vertical climbs with rocky granite filled trails. Wear your boots and the views will be worth every calorie you burn on the way up the mountain.
1st, you will need a high clearance vehicle; lots of potholes, And it takes about 40 minutes to get To the trail head from the Verlot ranger station. This Hike is listed as hard, and it's not kidding elevation, hiking on rocks but the payoff at the top is mind blowing. Bring lots of water. There are no good water sources are sources after the 1st half mile. Staying overnight in the lookout tower is 1st come 1st serve basis, and I've done it a handful of times.Sleeping in a hammock tied to the rafters as much better than sleeping on the hardwood floor and occasional mice visit. On a good day you can see Mount Rainier, mount Baker, and glacier peak, 3 of Washington's 5 volcanoes from this incredible vantage point.
Hiked Mt Pilchuck for the second time on 9/25. We were on the trail at 7 am, and there were already 10-15 cars in the lot. The road to get there is still terrible. Make sure you take an SUV! The hike was beautiful, plenty of good views with mostly shade on the way up. Took us 1:45 to get to the lookout and 1:25 to get back down to the lot. LOTS of rocks on this trail. Not like gravel, like big, annoying, you have to watch where you step all the time rocks.
Mount Pilchuck is a very rocky, pretty steep 5.6 mile hike with an awesome reward of a 360 degree view. On a clear day, you can see Mt Rainier, Mt Baker and Puget Sound. The road up to the trail head is very rough but if you have higher clearance 4wd, you'll be fine.
This is one of my favorite hikes! If you're in shape it's not too bad, but it's decently long with lots of switch backs and a scramble at the end. I would recommend getting there early before the crowds. Also get there before fog rolls in. We got to the trail head and made it to the top by 11? and it was just before clouds rolled in. It was fun to be the only two at the top too :
Awesome views on a clear day! Do this hike. You will not regret it. Just come early as the parking lot fills up fast and be prepared for 5 + miles of REALLY bad gravel road. the last 2 miles are old pavement....
Beautiful hike, cloudy or sunny it’s absolutely worth the trek! Definitely on the difficult side toward the end with several rock fields/scrambles, especially if wet, but definitely doable for the weekend hiker who wants a fun challenge. Highly recommended, but can be busy on weekends and road in is horrific it’s where potholes go to die.
Beware the 6 miles of road that leads up to the trail. There are potholes that will break your car axle. The trail itself was difficult. It took my twice as long to complete than I originally planned. A very steep climb with poles highly recommended. I attempted a sunrise hike but miss by an hour. The hike was gorgeous and provided lots of amazing views. The top of Mt. Pilchuck was Drop. Dead. Gorgeous. It's a must see.
Absolutely stunning views and not to tough of a hike. Went up on a Tuesday so not many people at the top. Amazing place to fly your drone and completely legal to do so. To the random guy who wanted to complain about the sound of the drone that only can fly for 15-20min. Your complaining was louder and more distracting than any drone could be. Everyone enjoys nature in their own way, sometimes people want to take drone footage so their disabled family members can experience the views also.
