This hike was deceptively hard for the relatively short distance, but that was specifically with the weight of a backpacking pack. Once you get up to the basin it’s amazing. It’s a pretty sprawling area with rocky outcrops, lush grass, and little streams winding their way through. There’s also a pit toilet which was helpful lol. We went on a summer weekend so it definitely wasn’t wilderness but there was plenty of space to still find your own nice site. Definitely don’t recommend hammock camping, there are hardly any trees so you’re extremely limited with your options.
The most mesmerizing and breathtaking hike when you conquer its peak. It is a definite must hike again. Loved it, lived it, conquered it. It has around 6-7 waterfalls, checkout the pics. Snow -Yes, a lot , last 400-500 ft Needs snow shoes with spikes Lake is frozen, be cautious. Be aware of snow holes while you hike.
This is a difficult, but insanely worth it hike. Gothic Basin is absolutely beautiful. If you are in good shape, or really want to push your boundaries, then this is a great hike. It has everything from waterfalls, to scrambling, to alpine lakes, and more.
A beautiful, yet tough hike. It was a bit confusing the find the actual trailhead, but once you find the gate off the side of the main road, walk along the wide, flat trail for a half mile or so until you arrive at the Gothic Basin trailhead. There are lots of water falls and water crossings as well as mountains across the basin on the way up, and there are additional views from the top along with two small lakes. There was quite a bit of snow at the top, and a few snow crossing towards the end of the trail on our way up at the end of June.
Beautiful hike! Sometimes it felt long & exhausting but totally worth it once you get to the magical spot at the top. You’ll need to be aware of the snow bridges as we went when it was blazing hot so things were starting to melt.
This is a unique hike that was challenging and rewarding. Best hike I have done so far. You experience some tough elevation gains , but also will run into some snow bridges. When I went in July there was still a lot of snow at the top. I recommend having trekking poles for stability over the snow bridges. Snow spikes are also good to have. All worth it for the views.
It's a crazy hike to get up there atleast 12 miles round trip but the view is better than you could ever imagine if the weather is clear. Waterfalls and small lakes everywhere!
This hike is TOUGH, but altogether worthwhile! The first jaunt takes you along a gravel road, and then through some lovely forest, but then the incline becomes steeply graded and unforgiving. We stopped for breathers several times, and the passerby concurred with our exhaustion! Once you summit the switchbacks, however, the going gets somewhat easier and the views become majestic. There are panoramic mountainscapes to marvel at, cascading waterfalls to cross, and boulder paths to scramble up. At the top of the trail you'll reach Gothic Basin, which is massive in its own right, and enjoy views of Foggy Lake. There were plenty of other hikers and campers on the trail in August. With it being a more narrow pathway, that meant bottlenecks on the way up and down and crowds at the basin. Even so, it was a fulfilling experience -- and certainly a workout!
Beautiful hike within fantastic scenery. It is however a lot longer than WTA says. Be prepared. Worth the effort though :
This hike is looooong but awesome. It is worth every step.
