Hey there! I’m Foxy Appetite, your go-to travel and restaurant reviewer. This time, I’m heading underground to explore something a little different—the Montreal Metro! I’ll be reviewing various stations across the city, focusing on aesthetic appeal, convenience, comfort, and more. Next stop: Mont-Royal Station nnVideo review coming soon on TikTok @foxy.appetite and Instagram @foxyappetite!nnnnLet’s talk about Mont-Royal Station.nnLocated in the heart of the Plateau-Mont-Royal, this station is more than just a transit stop—it’s a gateway to one of Montreal’s most vibrant, artistic, and culturally rich neighborhoods.nnnnAesthetic Appeal / AmbiancenMont-Royal station exudes a vintage charm that beautifully complements the Plateau’s bohemian spirit. Designed in the iconic 1960s Montreal Metro style, it showcases clean architectural lines, textured surfaces, and retro signage that nod to a bygone era. While not flashy, the station’s soft lighting and the occasional presence of street musicians create a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that feels both lived-in and inviting.nnMont-Royal also holds historical significance—it was among the first stations in the Montréal métro network to incorporate public art directly into its design. The platforms are lined with brown brick walls and benches accented by 32 vertical aluminum reliefs by renowned sculptor Charles Daudelin, installed in 1966. These highly textured works add depth and artistic character to the space, subtly elevating the everyday commute into something more thoughtful and immersive.nnnnAccessibility / ComfortnHere’s where the station could use some love. No elevators yet, which makes it less accessible for those with mobility challenges. On the plus side, platforms are roomy and there’s plenty of seating. Stairs and escalators handle rush-hour crowds pretty well, but accessibility upgrades would be a game-changer.nnnnProximity to Key SpotsnThis is where Mont-Royal truly shines. Right outside, you’re steps from Saint-Denis Street and Mont-Royal Avenue, packed with indie cafes, vintage boutiques, art galleries, and local eateries. Plus, it’s a short walk to Parc La Fontaine, a local favorite green space. Whether you’re a foodie, a shopper, or a wanderer—this area has it all.nnnnHistorical SignificancenOpened in 1966 as part of the original Metro network, Mont-Royal offers a nostalgic glimpse into Montreal’s transit history. Its design remains mostly untouched, making it a living time capsule of mid-century urban planning.nnnnLocation / ConnectivitynPositioned on the Orange Line, it’s a convenient midpoint between Berri-UQAM and Jean-Talon Station. While it doesn’t connect directly to other lines, several bus routes serve the area—especially the 97 Mont-Royal, making local travel easy.nnnnUnique FeaturesnWhat makes Mont-Royal stand out isn’t the station itself, but what’s around it. From bike paths and BIXI stations to spontaneous street art and local performers during festival season, the Plateau energy spills right into the metro entrance.nnnnOverallnMont-Royal Station may not be the most modern or accessible, but it’s full of character. With its vintage design, prime location, and vibrant neighborhood vibes, it’s a perfect intro to Montreal’s artistic soul. If you’re looking to explore the real Plateau, start here.
One of Montreal's best Metro stations with elevators, a modern entrance, bike parking, and a public plaza out front bordering a street that is fully pedestrian in the summer!
It's a *snappy* Metro station easy to get in or get out, depending on your requirements. A good style of commuters can be seen in their determination, as it should be. Look at all the info even the regulations which, fortunately enough, are not readily seen entering or leaving the station. You'll like your time at Mont-Royal station for sure, so simple congratulations will suffice.
Very nice subway station with a newly renovated entrance with elevators, why are people being so cranky about it. The station is more clean, modern and accessible and about the staircase, the station still isn’t finished so their is a possibility of the original staircase
Wonderful place, from these heights we can see the city of Montreal almost complete.nBeautiful place of pilgrimage for Christians.
