Mono Cliffs Provincial Park

Story

Mono Cliffs Provincial Park lies within the rural town of Mono, in southern-Ontario, Canada, along the Bruce Trail. It is part of the Niagara Escarpment Parks System, and the escarpment Biosphere Reserve.Main entranceThe main entrance to the park is located along the 3rd Line E.H.S. at a pay parking lot with washrooms. There is a map of the park and the seven colour-coded trails: Carriage Trail (red) Spillway Trail (blue) Cliff Top Trail (green) McCarston's Lake (orange) South Outlier Trail (yellow) Lookout Trail (grey) Bruce Trail (dotted) The map also indicates how each section of the trail can be used: hiking biking horseback riding campingNatural featuresRock faces: As the name suggests, the park has a number of cliff faces along the Niagara Escarpment itself. Along the Cliff Top Trail is a sturdy set of stairs which descend about down the rock face to a wooden path that runs between the cliff face and a small outlier, providing excellent views of the rock, ferns, and cedars. Caving, rock climbing, bouldering, and scrambling are not permitted anywhere in the park. Also along the Cliff Top Trail is a viewing platform that extends out over the cliff edge, with a great view to the north east across the park to the farms beyond.Large Outliers: There are two large 'outliers' that have been separated from the main escarpment edge.Water features: In the north west corner of the park is McCarston's Lake. There are also a number of streams and smaller ponds throughout the park, the largest just below the viewing platform.

This park has some awesome rock formation. It's smaller than you would imagine but is quite worth the hike. For those who want to see the rocks, it's on the north end of the Cliff top side trail (green line on the Ontario Parks map) which is accessible via the Carriage trail (orange line) which in turn starts at the parking lot.

Wide trails with no poison ivy in sight. Beautiful scenery and natural diversity from a walkway through a natural cavern to sunny ponds. Mostly flat walking but I did see a young family carrying their hiking stroller through a rougher stretch. Be aware that there is a fee to use the park ($14.50 for us) and that the outhouse buildings are less than pleasant. I'm a fairly seasoned hiker but the stench was hard to take. Lots of nice people to meet on the trails.

parked in the paid lot and only gave myself 2 hrs, it was a beautiful 2 hrs tho. I'll have to visit again and spend more time on the main Bruce trail. there were lots of friendly people and cute dogs around.

this is an absolutely beautiful forest with wonderful trails. we have ridden here with our horses. we like to dismount and kick any horse poo our guys leave off the trail! I would encourage others to so the same. today we entered the forest after another group had gone on. they did not kick their horses manure off the trails. this simple measure could help trails stay open to equestrians!!! the other people we have encountered at this park are wonderful. everyone is pleasant polite friendly. a wonderful place to ride or walk to experience nature at its finest in southern Ontario.

Great place to hike and take a walk, some trails are not for the novice hikers/walkers. The parking spot is pretty hidden from Google maps and Garmin's GPS systems. Washroom is like a whiff of hell, make sure you do your washroom stuff in nearby places that offer it. (i.e. gas stations) Take your time and enjoy the trails, just make sure you don't throw garbage on the trail and try to be mindful of what you're doing to preserve this park/trail.
