Loved the service and food! Ordered the braised pork combo and king chicken. The braised pork was good, not too strong flavoring. With it came about 5 pieces of popcorn chicken. It had very nice seasoning, crispy on outside, juicy in the middle. Lastly, the king chicken, I loved the salt, pepper, 5 spice seasoning. It was very crunchy, but I wasn't aware it was bone-in, so use caution when taking big bites!
I left work famished and noticed Monga Fried Chicken conveniently located right in Centre Street in Chinatown. I decided to try it. I was taken aback by their massive menu. It took me a while to choose because everything looked so good. I settled on Hot Misty chicken a plum based sweet and spicy seasoning, sweet potato balls, fried oyster mushrooms, and a pineapple jelly sparkling soda. The sparkling soda is like an Italian soda, but delightfully less sweet and refreshing. This one came with coconut jelly chunks! The fried oyster mushrooms were perfect. Decent portion. No notes. The chicken was a massive portion that was incredibly juicy. The seasoning I chose I found was lip licking delicious. I tried it with some hot sauce on the side out of curiosity but honestly it was good on its own with its seasonings that it doesn’t need sauce. Last the sweet potato balls. These ended up being the MVP. They are addictive AF! The texture is perfect as they have a crisp but chewy outer shell texture reminiscent of mochi or tapioca cheese puffs I suspect it has rice or tapioca flour. The inside is a smooth mashed sweet potato filling that squirts out like a lava cake! They are pretty golden brown and purple for visual interest. Honestly I will be getting another order of these before I leave. Last, the service was fantastic! The staff were patient and attentive and asked what I thought. Very impressed! Vegetarian options: The sweet potato balls, fries, tempura vegetables, and fried oyster mushrooms are some examples for vegetarians.
Had an awesome time at this fried chicken joint in Calgary! The chicken was seriously on point - so crispy and delicious, and that oozy cheese, oh my! Not to mention those scrumptious sweet potato fried balls, yum! And the passion fruit jinxuan tea? A total game-changer - fruity and super refreshing. If you're in town, this place is a definite must-visit! Highly recommended!
This place is a scam. I am assuming the bulk of the reviews are fake, because I cannot imagine someone paying for this and being happy. Below is what Monga will sell as $48 dollars of fried chicken. to be clear, the coke wasn't part of the order - I've just included it for scale. The quality of the chicken is also poor - excessively salty, and not a good batter. There are many better places to try in Downtown. Do not waste your money here.
I ordered the chee-z signature chicken, and it was way bigger than I was expecting! I couldn’t finish it all in one sitting. The fries here are really flavourful too.Food: 5/5
Very satisfied with what I ordered. I tried the king fried chicken and braised pork rice combo, both were delicious. The fried chick was very crunchy outside and juicy inside. And the braised pork rice was just very close to Taiwanese favor. Also, the oolong tea and passion fruit green tea were refreshing. Good food made my day lol Will definitely come back to try other dishes!
I recently tried Mongu, a Taiwanese fried chicken spot in Chinatown, Calgary. As someone who enjoys trying new things, I was intrigued by the concept of Taiwanese-style fried chicken, as I had never heard of it before. Being a fan of Korean fried chicken, I decided to give it a try. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by a friendly staff member who helped me choose what to order. I opted for the spicy fried chicken breast combo and was pleasantly surprised when I was informed that I would receive complimentary sweet potato balls skewers if I wrote a review. While the restaurant’s atmosphere could be improved, as it lacks a cozy ambiance, I would recommend ordering through your preferred food app for a more comfortable experience. Now, onto the food itself. The highlight of the meal was definitely the fries. They were freshly fried, seasoned with a delightful blend of spices that had a spicy yet sweet kick to them. The fries were absolutely delicious. As for the chicken, the portion size was larger than I expected, and the coating had a satisfying crunch. However, I found the chicken to be somewhat dry, possibly due to the unique batter, which resembled a savory cookie rather than the typical fried chicken batter. Upon realizing this, I inquired about additional sauce options such as honey garlic, soy or sweet and sour, but unfortunately, the only option available was ketchup. After consuming half of the chicken, I felt satisfied and decided not to finish the rest. While the flavor was enjoyable, I personally prefer saucy fried chicken. Overall, Mongu provided a new and interesting culinary experience, but it didn’t fully meet my expectations in terms of moistness and sauce variety.
Very tasty. A unique spot to try for sure. I had the wasabi chicken, and it was delicious. Super crispy, the chicken was juicy and the flavouring was excellent. The staff were all very friendly and happy to answer any questions we had/ offer recommendations. The menu had a lot of cool items that I will definitely be going back to try!
Basically all kinds of the fried chicken are amazing. We just ordered a big combo, and it's totally enough for 4 people as lunch. Will come back. All the staffs are frendly. They help us to split the bills.Food: 5/5
