Okay, not great. but not bad! I had lunch recently at Modern India and must say it was just okay. I used to go regularly to this restaurant when it was on Walnut and Main and also the current location. The cleanliness of the premises and the food were second to none. The price was also very reasonable. This was my first visit since the renovation. I don't know if I would go back or not. The food was okay, not as good as before. The atmosphere, while clean is just less warm and inviting than before. I also felt a bit rushed. Also the price for lunch is just too much now. The price is more in keeping with an Indian buffet in Toronto, not Hamilton. At $15 for lunch, plus tax and tip, its just not worth it anymore. Sorry Modern. being modern just doesn't cut it for me anymore.
They finished their renovations and it seems like things are back to the old days but their 9.99 buffet is now 14.99 and they don't have a cheaper lunch price. The food is excellent. Service was good. The buffet was fully stocked. Did I mention the food was excellent? I'm not sure if your waist line will handle eating AYCE Indian food with all of the rich sauces on a regular basis but if you're hungry for Indian it's worth a binge once in a blue moon.
It's not an all-you-can-eat buffet anymore. They moved the restaurant into the basement, and now it's more of a cafeteria-style fast food place. No alcohol anymore, either. Yeah, there aren't as many dishes to choose from, and I miss being able to endlessly stuff my gob while swilling beer. But it's the food that's important. The quality of the food at the buffet had been going down over the last couple of years. Since scaling down and moving downstairs, the food is back up to par. Prices are reasonable, too. I wouldn't say Modern India is a destination restaurant these days, but if you're in the neighbourhood and looking for a quick bite, it's definitely worth checking out.
The food is good, and filling, but the hostess is rude, and the price continues to steadily rise. Used to come with a beer, and last time I went I asked. The host said yes, it still comes with drinks, so my wife had a beer and I had a mango shake. Next thing I know, it's on the bill, an extra $5+ each, which really added up. I think our lunch was $45 including tip. It used to be much better.
This place used to be great. It used to be my first choice for Indian food in Hamilton. Now they have turned what was once a really nice Buffet into something only half the size, and it is no longer a buffet. Basically it is a row of steam tables and you can fill a foam container with food and pay for it at a much higher price than ever before. If you go back for seconds you have to pay the price again, and they have eliminated all of the flatware and the plates in favor of foam boxes and plastic utensils. They have totally ruined one of the best Indian food experiences in Hamilton. In my humble opinion simply don't bother going here anymore -- they'll be out of business in a month and it's a complete waste of your time.
The staff was very nice, and the kitchen looked very clean. However I'm sorry to say that the food is quite dreadful. I would describe the food as likened to a preserved Indian curry you get on the shelf which you microwave, but then watered down with literal water at a 50% rate. It's not the cooks' fault for sure, it must be the owners trying to cut corners. All the dishes a very watery, and the prices are high for Hamilton. I see that lots of people wrote good things about this place before, but as of June 2014 I can say that they must be hurting for business or the owners are keeping all the $ and not putting it back on food. I felt a tad dirty after leaving, it was quite a soul crushing meal. I hope they change their ways.
This use to be a great indian all you can eat buffet restaurant, but they have changed drastically. I don't know if the owners have sold to someone new but it's no longer all you can eat, they don't even have dishes, plastic and metal bowls you would get for take out Chinese food. The selection is less than half of what it use to be and it's 10 bucks for a little container of food. It's a shame because I use to recommend this restaurant to all my friends, now I'm on the hunt for a new all you can eat buffet. I will not be back.
Love this place. Disregard reviews saying that the place is in the basement... they're outdated. They *were* limited to their basement and to a reduced, take-out menu only during renovations, but they are back in full force, with even more menu choices. Lots of options for mixed groups, in terms of omnivores/vegetarians/vegans etc. Good place to bring Indian food newbies, too. Buffet lets you sample small portions if you're not familiar with the spice palette, and still lots of mild options for the hesitant or unadventurous. Highly recommend it.
I'm not sure what's with all the negative reviews and them "being in the basement" - I was there 2 weeks ago it's currently Aug 19 2016, and the restaurant is not in the basement. I've done the buffet, which was great. I really enjoy their take out special, I think it's the best take out Indian you can get and it's really reasonably priced. The staff is really helpful and friendly and I have yet to have a bad experience since I've moved to the Hamilton area.
I believe this restaurant was recently renovated, as all the decor was fairly fresh when we were here. There's a smaller selection than what I would usually expect at a buffet but the food was good generally, although a few dishes were definitely iffy looking and I say this as a person who has eaten a lot of iffy looking food, Indian or otherwise. The taste was fine generally and for the price that they charge there's not much more you can ask for. I wouldn't go here on a first date though and I didn't.
