We went rafting on the Deschutes for (my) first time as part of a large group that has been going for years, and we tent-camped at the Maupin City Park area. It was so great! The tent area was grassy and comfortable, with shade trees and river access. The facilities were very well maintained, spacious, and clean. The showers are quarter-operated and the on-site Office stocks plenty of quarters. Drawbacks: the outdoor lighting kept turning off at random times, almost like the motion-sensors were rigged to turn OFF as you passed under. Not a terrible thing, as the stars out there are spectacular, and the parking area is totally level. Also, a train thunders by at least once per night, right across the river, which is VERY CLOSE and VERY LOUD. The first night I didn't hear it (thanks to imbibing that day) but the second night it woke me twice. Overall, though, a great place to stay and I'd definitely go again.

Really lovely campground right on the river. Spots are very close to one another with little privacy, but the open views make it feel okay. The small town is so unique and busy with rafters during the day...feels special to be a part of the community while you're there. The bathrooms are old but seem to be consistently clean and well maintained. Freight trains do come by periodically but didn't disrupt our sleep while we were there. It's a bit of a drive to get there, but that's part of the draw of this spot!

Nice campgrounds with good blend of shady and sunny areas. Most sites are riverfront or next to Bakeoven Creek. On weekends, it is very full; some "renegade" tenters arrived very late and brazenly occupied a place where there didn't happen to be a tent. Otherwise, everyone was very mild and considerate campers. Met many nice and interesting folks. Lots of lawn and trees. Fresh water plentiful. Daytime high temperature a stifling 97 F/37 C. Restrooms and pricy showers well maintained. Not 5 stars because of closeness of other campsites.
