My favorite Mexican restaurant in Rochester. I went on a Saturday night at 6:30pm, only waited about 5 minutes before being seated. Ordered a classic margarita with salt, on point as always. For dinner, I ordered the enchiladas de mole which comes with chicken. Absolutely delicious! Service was good, very attentive even being so busy. Highly recommend if you've never been before, you're missing out!
First time at Maria's and it's a neat/interesting spot, located at the back of a repurposed church. The restaurant itself is at the basement level, and has a nice atmosphere with lots of plants and decor. The menu is basic offering mainly burritos, mole, fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, etc. We enjoyed the house margaritas, though they were severed room temperature with no ice. We ordered the Mexican Flag enchiladas and enjoyed the mole sauce. Also ordered the spicy green enchiladas, however I found them to not have any spice and found them under seasoned. I think this is a great place for people who want more muted flavor.
Very nice people running and super cute spot inside . Maybe I'm spoiled after living in SoCal for 25 years, but it was ok. On the other hand this is upstate New York, so relatively speaking it was good compared to other Mexican places around here. I got the Tres Tacos, I thought chorizo was best; bf got enchiladas which he really liked. He also got the house margarita which he also liked a lot.
Tucked away on the first floor of a church-turned-market is Maria’s, which we happened upon on our journey around Rochester. It was worth the search and discovery! We had delicious chips and salsa and homemade guac to start - the latter freshly made and perfectly served. The house margaritas weren’t too sweet - a real homemade taste - and came rimmed with salt. The boy had a tasty pink lemonade. For dinner, the enchiladas were savory and filling - I had three of the five filings, and each hit the spot. The made to order bean and cheese mole entree dish was made especially for a vegetarian - our server had no problem substituting for vegetarian, and freely offered vegan options had we required them. The kid had a chicken taco he described as “the perfect taco,” and a side of rice and beans - though he filled up on the guac. The service was personable and attentive, and at times genuinely friendly. The place was full of satisfied regulars, and the tables were clean and felt bright in the natural light. We left quite full and also quite glad. One note: we parked out front by the street and enjoyed winding our way through the church, but clearly most folks park around back. It’s worth the trek!
Warm service, great, authentic foods. I ordered the special, a complicated dish I’d been wanting to make Chile Rellenos Nogada it was great! I can see why this is traditionally a holiday/special occasion dish.
Well I am sad to say the food was only average last night. Not the 5 plus stars I was hoping for. The grandsons liked their chicken fingers but nachos we too hard for them to really get into but they did try. As for my burritos just average nothing special. Maybe it was an off night or end of the week. The staff was very busy but stretched thin. I loved it last time so I may give it a 3rd try.
Finally, I was able to dine at this famous Mexican, must say impressive all about! Margaritas are real, not watered ,limit 3 ,mine was 1. Fajitas was the most delicious steak. You cut the steak yourself, and you can add onion/pepper .Your choosing. Would definitely go back! Thanks Maria's!
I used to go here over 10 years ago and the food has not gone downhill one bit. They are absolutely fantastic and amazingly authentic. This is the best Mexican food I have had since I lived in Southern California. Enchiladas were amazing, the coconut papaya shrimp was out of this world delicious, I'm not sure if the flan or the Tres leches cake was better, but if you're debating between the two, I honestly suggest you just get them both. From memory, I had a lot of friends that loved their margaritas, though I'm not much of a drinker nor do I remember them from way back when also didn't buy one... That being said, I do mean it when I say my friends back then all said they had the best, margaritas I really doubt there's anything on this menu that would steer you wrong, my biggest set of advice is order what you like and add at least one new item you don't know each time you buy here. 90% chance you won't be disappointed And treat yourself to desert, you deserve it Parking: This restaurant is located in the back of an old church. You probably would never know it was there unless you were looking for it. Parking is behind the church down a hill in the back. The restaurant is right there on ground level in the back, but from the front it looks just like it's a church and that's it. There is a sign, but it's not easy to see. Kind of a well kept secret for locals
Update: Came here again for Cinco de Mayo today just as good as before!! Very friendly waitresses and they were very patient as well!! Looking forward to next visit! Amazing food! Very accommodating and friendly!!! Plus gluten free!!! Cant wait to go back!! I got an enchilada and tostada with beans and rice
I get lunch from here regularly. I like that it is authentic food and the fact that this place has been around for at least 30 years. If your food sucks you don't stay in business. Very good food, reasonable prices and the staff is helpful and courteous.
