Since Lai's Auto Service Ltd. first opened its doors in 1986, we have remained committed to offering complete auto services at affordable prices.

Story

Lai's Auto Service is local owed family run business that was started by my father Bert Lai. He started learning from GM Training Center in Winnipeg in 1960. He worked as automotive tech in many service station and decided to create is own in 1974. In 1974 Bert Lai opened up Bert 's Central service in Sutherland area for 11 years then we moved to Lorne Ave in 1986. In 1986 we operated as Lai's Auto Service. I have been working with my father since I was a kid and followed his foot step in to the automotive repair world. We Keep up to date with on going training and equipment as well. Thanks

A couple weeks ago, our car's steering wheel got stiff and hard to turn. The problem came and went, but as a precaution we took our car to Lai's for a checkup. They found that the power steering line pressure hose was leaking, and replaced it for $700+. When we got our car back, Chris (their owner) said "Oh by the way, our mechanic found that your sway bar bracket was broken. That might have contributed to the problem." So we drove off, the steering wheel even stiffer than before. But since Chris said that it could be the second thing, we trusted him, asked for a quote, and had them fix it the following week. It costed $600+. When they handed us the car back, the steering wheel was still extremely stiff. Did their staff even test if they fixed the problem or not? So we drove right back to Lai's, and one of their staff took the wheel and suggested that it was the power steering pump that's getting weak. When we questioned why our primary concern still wasn't addressed after two repairs, the staff deferred to Chris, who was away and wouldn't return until the following week. But after $1300+ (which is a lot of money to us), and hours and hours of waiting at their shop, only to have our sometimes-kind-of-stiff steering wheel became extremely stiff all the time, we couldn't trust them with our car and money anymore. So we took our car to another mechanic. Well, guess what -- it's simply some bearing that has dried out. They lubed it up and now the steering wheel turns as smooth as silk. Took those guys 30 minutes to figure that out, and they charged us 60 freaking bucks for the job. So, no, it's not the power steering pump. Imagine if we took their staff's word and actually had them replace that too? Now, I know the bearing may dry out again and could require replacement in the long run. And our vehicle is 16 years old -- we get that there are many things that are worn out and could justify replacement. So it's POSSIBLE that the two things Lai's replaced in our car were necessary -- not being car experts ourselves, we'd never know. But my point is that we took our car to Lai's because the steering wheel was stiff. They got 2 cracks at it, and still failed to diagnose a problem for which there is a simple and affordable fix. However, this incompetence would not stop them from suggesting costly repairs. Their customer service was also lacking, as they could complete the aforementioned costly repairs and take your money without even acknowledging that they never repaired the problem you asked them to. On the heels of such disappointing experiences, I'm afraid we can't recommend Lai's services to anyone. UPDATE: Several hours after the posting of the above review, Chris called to explain his viewpoint, and offered to repair our problem for free. We declined the offer as we'd rather move on from this experience, but we appreciate him making some effort to rectify the situation.

Took in my son’s car. They gave us accurate information and allowed us to make a decision. You can’t ask for more than that. I had researched what I needed done but other places always gave me information that suited them. These guys just let you know your options and you decide.

They had fast and friendly service. I called one day and they fit me in the next day. Was able to pick my car up just after lunch (oil change and block heater plug replacement). Reasonable prices for an independent shop! They even e-mailed me a report based on their complimentary inspection during the oil change to identify any concerns with other parts of the car. If you live nearby I would definitely recommend bringing your car here!

My car threw a code out of the blue, as vehicles tend to do. I called them in the morning they got my car Diagnostics done and called me in less than 2 hours! They had my car back to me less than 3 hours after that! They were polite, honest, and cooperative. I would definitely take my car back to them!

We generally drive older vehicles have been using Lai's services for over 30 years. We have never had a complaint. They always give you a good estimate of what a repair will cost and are helpful to prioritize what should be done right away and what can wait. Fast and friendly service.
