Had an older fireplace that needed servicing and was concerned about why my pilot light went out. When the technician arrived, he re-lite the pilot light and said there was no issues but, I would need to replace the gaskets. When parts arrived he came back to replace them and cleaned the glass. When he re-lite the pilot light he told me there is a now a leak and because it was an older unit I need to replace all the parts/valves and was quoted $1600. I paid for the full service and the gaskets which turned out to be way more than quoted. Wish I was told about the leak before having them replace the gaskets and pay for servicing when nothing was really done. Called another company who came in took a second look and fixed the leak within 5 minutes, no parts needed just a simple tune and was charged a very reasonable amount. Super disappointed! Update: Received a phone call from James right after posting the review. He noted that all work should have been discussed in the first visit and was genuinely concerned about me not being 100% satisfied. He also explained that the company does not like to service on older units that may cause failure in the future. I appreciate the call and hope that this does not happen in the future.
I had Kirkstone do a 30 point inspection/maintenance on my two gas fireplaces, $500 for the service. One of the fireplaces was not staying lit, and the technician told me the valve needed replacing. He quoted me $1700 to fix the problem. My neighbour suggested another heating contractor, who repaired the real problem, the thermocouple and sensor, for $200. The other contractor completed the work in less than an hour, and its like new. Beware. Update on this: Kirkstone called me soon after posting the one star review above and were very concerned, especially about my being charged for a fireplace that was not working at the end of the service. The customer rep also explained that it's possible that the valve will need replacing in the future and they don't like doing a service that may fail in the next year. That said, it would have been better if they gave me the option, with a warning that it may fail. I update this review to a 3 from a 1
