Killarney Provincial Park

Story

Killarney Provincial Park is a provincial park in central Ontario, Canada.Although not as well known as the world-famous Algonquin Provincial Park, Killarney is one of Ontario's most popular wilderness destinations. With its sapphire blue lakes and white quartzite ridges it is considered one of the crown jewels of the Ontario Park system. The park contains just one campground at the George Lake entrance as it is primarily a wilderness park. There are few facilities to allow visitors a chance to experience the solitude and beauty of its undisturbed natural setting. It boasts spectacular hiking trails and canoe-in back-country camping. The canoe routes include well maintained portages between lakes. The campground includes six heated yurts which have electric lighting, a power outlet, a propane barbecue and bunk beds.Situated on the north shore of Georgian Bay in the municipality of Killarney, the park straddles the La Cloche range, large rounded white quartzite hills that dominate the landscape. The white peaks and cliffs contrast with the pine and hardwood forests and the boggy lowlands that surround the park's many lakes.Quartzite is weather-resistant and contains few nutrient-bearing minerals. Soils, where present, tend to be shallow and infertile. Very stony sandy loam is the most common soil texture reported. Podzol profile development is usual in well-drained situations. Mineral-rich rock types such as diabase and limestone occur locally and the soils that have developed over them support some of the park's more luxuriant vegetation.

We had a very pleasant experience hiking throughout the park. All the bikes we completed were scenic, not difficult for a 30 year old, and enjoyable. Bring water! We drove around the main camping location and it looks good, but we didn't stay the night as it wasn't planned. The beach was well maintained and the water was nice. The visitor centre was packed with people and they were very busy. I do wish that they had more of the park clothing options seen at Lake Superior Park. I will happily visit again.

Love how many trails there are and had a great time! Used campsite in the 20's it was well away from everyone else. Saw a beaver while canoeing! Everyone was very dog friendly and that made it an easier and comfy place to be. Great customer service, and they have hot showers! Can't wait to go back again. Only thing that wasn't so nice is all the rocks made it hard to peg the tent down

As a landscape photographer I definitely recommend this national park to anyone in Ontario. Its one of the best national parks in Ontario let alone Canada! Lots of trails, camping spots and enough challenging terrain for all fitness level. I was here during late August where the weather was still warm. Make sure you book your campsite well in advance as they tend to be booked months before. Also bring lots of bug spray and enjoy the scenery as much as I did!

A great park! I recommend going to the Silver Peak as it has the greatest view of the park, and going to the Topaz Lake on the way back, both hikes take around 6 hours and include canoeing, hiking and bouldering!

A beautiful park with lots of trails. Well kept, clean, regulary maintained facilities and campsites. My only complaint was it being "very busy" and this was a bit of a turn off for me when hiking the trails.
