Kettle Moraine State Forest Mukwonago River Unit

We parked in the lot on the south side of the Park. The trail is obvious but not marked and has more of a deer path look to it. Soon you could tell a tractor had driven through at some point but we were definitely walking through plants (luckily I wore pants). Then we hit a more cleared path the width of a one way road. At some point you can see the asphalt from years gone by. We had a beautiful hike with our dogs. Woods, grassland, small lakes/wetlands to the sides. We hiked for a couple of hours and there is plenty more to go back and explore. It is rustic, no facilities! So come prepared. There is a picnic bench at the south parking lot.

Great hiking, views and a beautiful river and lakes. Ticks are a problem as with any wild place in Wisconsin. It is flat so hiking is a breeze. River access for kayaks and caneos.

This property has a fascinating history with an unopened/completed 800 room hotel that was built in 1963 and destroyed by fire in 2002. A 36 hole championship golf course opened in 1963 and closed in 2010. A supper club building and sportsman complex also was open on the property.
