Enjoyed this tempura place a lot! The space is modern and cozy, a great match to the friendly staff who helped us when we dined in for dinner. We ordered the new Salmon Tempura and the Special Tempura Bowl. Both were yummy and quite filling! Each bowl comes with miso soup, so that’s always nice. If you don’t want the sauce on the tempura, you can easily ask for it on the side.
This is the best tempura rice I've ever tasted I swear. I just can't get enough of it! It is very flavorful and their special chili powder makes it more appetizing. Their premium and special bowl are the best! Their side dishes are refillable as well. I love how they serve the hot tea in a thermos so it never gets cold. This place is a definite must try. I frequent this place for lunch.
This is my 2nd time here and it impressed me even more. There are other non Japanese tempura places with similar concept but I still love the freshness of the seafood, presentation, service and portions here by a long shot. Today’s indulgence was the udon & mini tempura combo and for just a mere $5 one could upgrade with miso soup, steamed egg custard and a tofu appy. Completely stuffed after this evenings dinner and their complimentary pickles were addictive as I had just a tad too much. If one is famished you can add on more seafood or veggies like I did.
Really solid tempura bowls! I ordered the oyster tempura bowl which came with tempura green beans, prawns, mixed seafood, seaweed, and soft boiled egg. The oyster tasted fresh enough and was not fishy. I had the sauce on the side which helped prevent the crispy tempura from getting soggy. Loved the side dishes as well, especially the kimchi-like pickle! It was not busy at all around 4:30pm on a weekday when I went, though it does take about 15min for the food to come out.
Little Japanese place on Robson near Denman serving tempura dishes on rice. I ordered the scallop bowl. It comes with 3 pieces of scallop 2 pieces for oyster which is larger pieces, a piece of seaweed, a soft boiled egg, couple pieces of prawn and green bean. The seafood tasted fresh and not fishy at all. The rice was soft and chewy. When you finish having some of the seafood pieces, you break the egg open to mix the yolk with the rice and it makes a tasty combination together with the tempura sauce. There was a nice touch of yuzu on top of the seafood. Service was friendly and attentive. The place was neat and stylish. Only thing is the chairs were a bit weird in that I kept bumping my elbows into the short pointy arm rests.
Review summary, the food is amazing, atmosphere is great, customer service makes you smile, this place deserves far higher reviews. I stepped into Kaneko Hannosuke, not having read the reviews, simply because the store front looked cute. It wasn’t until after I ordered that I decided to pull out my phone and check. At the time of me writing this, the review average is 3.8 stars. I began to worry, maybe I had picked the wrong place. It had been a long day, and I didn’t want to ruin it with some mediocre meal. Once my food arrived, I took a single bite, and was outraged. How could reviews for this restaurant be so criminally low? The presentation was created with care, the food arrived quickly, the lady who served me was cheery, and the food? Phenomenal. The distinct yet subtle flavor provides a experience that highlights the quality of the tendon. The “family secret sauce”, along with the egg, makes the rice into a meal by itself. The portions are fantastic, leaving you fully satisfied. They even provide a cute instruction manual on how to best enjoy your meal. The thought that a couple of customers with the palates of literal donkeys left low reviews brings me tremendous sadness, as it will hold back more of Vancouver from getting to experience such a wonderful meal. Hell, even their ginger tastes better than most places in Vancouver. If I could give a 10 star review, I would in a heartbeat. My expectations were far surpassed, and I am grateful I wandered into Kaneko Hannosuke without looking at the reviews first.
Absolutely loved this place. This spotlessly clean hole in the wall feels spacious and airy thanks to the blonde wood decor. Feels very authentic Japanese in presentation and service. The food is also fantastic. I had the special bowl, and as you can see it was loaded with a variety of amazingly fried tempura. White fish and scallop were both new for me, and were delicious! Will be visiting again, and taking my friends!
Went there around 1pm to skip the lunch time, server is friendly and let us know in advance food will take around 20mins. I assume that is because food are freshly made after order Not the best Ten Don I had, but is still consider one of the better one I had in Vancouver, will go back again.
I did have so much expectation for this restaurant. I was the last customer on that evening and order premium Tendon. Basically they do not know how to cook rice… rice was all wet, not fully cooked n sticky together….not to mention deep fried shrimp and fish…. It is not worth $23.95. Don’t expect similar Japanese’s quality and service. Waitress asked me if everything ok, I show her the rice, and she just said nothing n walked away…. Will not recommend anyone go there! Not rated any star at all. Don’t waste money if you have tried any tempura restaurants in Japan. Your restaurant is selling tempura and deep fried seafood, rice n source. It opens more than a year, still “cannot” control the standard quality and need customer to advise you rice is not well cook, but server did nothing to correct this issue immediately… That is called “ignore” What are you trying to achieve. Some people will say … it is only $20 meal … what do you expect? But I know that if you buy a burger or French fried from MCDONALDS. If I tell them the burger is cold or fried is not crispy. The manager will not even look at your food and replace it immediately or give your money back. You are well known brand in . If you can’t keep up the quality don’t try to pretend your staff is trained under Japanese management n skill. Please… do something …. I also went to Tendon Kohaku yesterday. The food is wonderful, the server and cook is well trained n standard Japanese restaurant quality. Definitely will go back there again..
Crispy tempura, flavourful saucewe asked put sauce on side not pour and tempura egg mixed with rice taste amazing. Problems are the portion,it is a little small if you are hungry and waited for 20 minutesThey told all customers to wait for 20minutes. And side pickles come with meal but they served 4 of us tiny one person portion. My next table 2 customers got a same size. They were too busy couldn’t ask more of them. Hope they serve pickles individually.
