Amazing lunch omakase experience! Not only was everything absolutely delicious but at $45 it’s great value for money. Every piece of sushi was tender and flavourful and the cooked dishes were outstanding as well. Great service and even a complimentary dessert offered at the end of the meal. Will definitely be coming back for more!Recommended dishesSoup, Sushi, Tamago, Albacore Tuna
Alfred and Andrew are very creative and promising chefs. You can tell that they really care about each ingredient. The pairing of every ingredient is thoughtfully partnered together and you can tell they considered the lingering taste of each dish by the way they sequence out the dishes. Also, the sushi rice is really well made, each kernel of rice is soft but not mushy. I would really encourage everyone to give this place a try and support the young team. This is my first review ever for a place. I decided that I would give this place a 5/5 because they don’t deserve the 4.2 current review. There are definitely points they could improve on for the overall experience and I’m really hopeful that they stay for a long time so I can enjoy the benefits of their growth and professional development as chefs.
My husband and I visited a few days ago with such high expectations. The first Appetizer, Sea cucumber was beyond salty but then the fish roe appetizer was too bland. The third appetizer was alright. Sushi was where everything went south. The first 8 pieces were way too salty. Shari was marinated too much with seasoning and then the chef kept putting extra sauce on all of the neta. Salmon roe was the worst of them all. It tasted like someone poured soy sauce by mistake. Then they made second batch of rice and switched for the last pieces because the last 2 sushi tasted great. Tamago was very good and castella-like. I really wanted to like this place. I love seeing small local businesses thriving. Since the price point was too good to be true and the other reviews were great, I had such high expectation. Sad.
Came here to try their $88 omakase, and we enjoyed our meal. For $88, I feel like we got a lot of interesting dishes and had a good experience. In general, all the fish was prepared well, and the ingredients tasted fresh. The crispy skin rock fish, scallop tempora, and the hohicha Michi dessert were some of my favourites. As some pointed out, they don't currently serve alcohol, but you can bring your own wine or sake for $12. I thought it was a pretty good accommodation. One thing I would suggest is that they should perhaps play some sort of background music to help with the ambience. It's either super quiet at times or you can hear the bus departing. In summary, I enjoyed my meal and I felt that the two young chefs are passionate and trying to serve food that's high quality.
Arrived on a Sunday evening for a 7:30pm reservation and sat at the bar. Ordered the $88 Dinner tasting menu with high hopes of being fresh and tasty. However, after tasting a few dishes I was definitely disappointing in the lack of quality of both the fish and the meat. The pork belly meat was dry and tough but flavour of the dish was solid. Tamago egg was cakey and light but super dry. Note: for one of the nigiri pieces we were served albacore tuna. For an $88 tasting menu this is the last fish I would think to be served. Furthermore, the consistency of the albacore tuna was mushy indicating poor quality and freshness. Their hospitality was poor considering there were only 6 people total dining in. When explaining the dishes we heard a few mumbles and could not clearly understand what the chef was saying. They did not show any expression when serving guests and did not ask how each dish was - in terms of flavour and experience. There was no music in the restaurant to set the vibe. Note: No alcohol on the menu As a newly opened restaurant I would think that service and quality of ingredients would be at an all time high. Definitely lots of things to improve upon. Ultimately, I was unsatisfied and ended up eating more food when I got home.
Itosugi Kappo Cuisine is an interesting new omakase spot in Vancouver. I've been for their 10 course Kappo omakase twice now, about a month apart. The first visit, a couple of the courses were a miss for us, but I really think they have taken some of the criticisms they've received in some recent reviews to heart. For our second visit, quite a few of the courses had been changed/improved a scallop tempura dish and a smoked tuna tataki were standouts for me. The restaurant is small and they don't have a liquor license, but you can bring your own bottle of wine for a modest corkage fee $12. The service can also be a bit slow, and they also seemed to forget that we requested the sushi bar at our second visit. Still, for first time restaurant owners, I think some growing pains are to be expected. The owner/chef himself is super nice, and you can tell he is dedicated to his craft. Overall, I have had positive experiences at Itosugi Kappo Cuisine. While I still love more traditional omakase spots like Masayoshi, I also really like the concept of a PNW focused omakase featuring local and seasonal ingredients, so I hope to see this restaurant succeed.
Don’t waste your time and money here. It felt like a scam. What it appeared to me is an attempt to create authentic Japanese Kaiseki meal but no where CLOSE to being authentic and they’re definitely over charging. I would not even pay $30 for that meal. Both the “chefs” looked super young. The main guy cutting the fish was wearing sweatpants and you can see his phone hanging out of his pocket. He looked like he did not know how to hold a knife or cut the fish. Like many other 1 star reviews, you can barely hear them when they introduced the dishes. The food was either super salty or bland. It felt like everything was plopped into a dish with sauce dumped on top. I heard them mention dishes with dashi many times. To me, it felt like I was eating Chinese food… Fried shrimp ball that did not taste fresh. Winter melon in dashi soup with fish/shrimp paste. Marinated salty pork belly. Salty sea cucumber. For dessert, 2 small pieces of nectarine. We finished dinner just a bit after 2 hours. Took 10-15 minutes per dish to come out. No one thanked us or said bye when we left. My friend and I made reservations about a month ago after seeing this restaurant featured on tik tok and instagram. It looked legit. I read reviews before making a reservation and they were all 5 stars. But after what I experienced, it was NO WHERE near 5 stars and did not match what the 5 star reviews said. I personally think the 5 star reviews are fake reviews from friends and family. No way anyone would think $88 was worth it for this meal. With tips and tax, you’re paying $100 for a meal and one of the dishes contains half a cherry tomato.. the meal felt like a joke.
My overall experience was not bad, although the dishes were definitely a hit or miss. I absolutely loved the white fish with the spikey fried skin and the sushi was not bad. The miso soup was questionable and the fish that was in the soup was not descaled properly. I had 4-5 pieces of scales that I had to spit out. Then there was the dish that was a tad slimy and tasted like herbal soup with custard on the bottom that I also did not love. But other than that, everything else was pretty yummy. My only suggestion here is that they really should add some classical or Japanese background music because the place itself is not very big and we felt very awkward conversing across the table when the room of strangers were basically dead silent. Dimming the lights would also be very helpful in setting the mood, it was just a tad too bright there. Another factor that I did not love was simply that the open kitchen had the fryer right out front and the smell would waft over every time something was being fried. A nice experience overall, although not my favourite.
Oh boi , where do I even start. I've came here a few weeks ago. We had the kappo option. First dish was a sea cucumber with some sauce, its a bit salty. Second dish consisit of the fish roe. Not fishy but abit blend. Third dish was this okra skinned tomatoe and some purple thing. I don't eat okra normally but this one was dry ,taste like cucumber so it was okay.. Forth dish was a yuzu? Cirtusy sauce in a fish sashimi? It was okay.. I feel like the sauce or marinate wasn't evenly distributed. Fifth dish was the shrimp with yolk. It was meh as well. Yolk was abit strong. Shrimp doesn't feel fresh. Starting from the 6th dish ,we are getting some fried good. The frying was alright but the inside is blend. The only dish I give creative points was the 7th dish. Consist of a fish and a fried skin that gives an impression like soft shell crab. And then we have the dashi broth dishes.. steamed egg with no seafood or filling in it. Fianlly we have our sushi.. consist of 4 mediocre pieces... Geoduck, sockeye salmon, some fish and a fishy snail ??? Idk I couldn't really stomach it. Maybe just me. But for 88$ there's no uni or otoro or anything worth the price.... The egg was meh. The green broth was not appetizing . The dessert mochi was so overcooked and harden ?? . I saw review photos of black cod and dorayaki. I thought I would at least get some of those dishes from the reviews. Welp. I am an omakase eutheist and for 88$ this could do better... It feels Like there was a lack of planning and communication? We sat there for 2.5hours ? When we left we didn't feel full at all . I was disappointed... Hopefully they can plan this out better.. and have better selection of foods.
Tried their $55 omakase menu, overall seafood was fresh and its worth it for the price, but definitely needs to improve on the flavour, some pieces tasted bland such as the halibut and rockfish, needed to ask for wasabi and soy sauce to add to the flavour. I understand this place is very new and it’s only run by two chefs and one server so there needs to be more practice in their service. When I went in they only asked if we were doing the Kappo or Omakase, I said Omakase and was seated at the bar as reserved. However, no menu was provided, and I had to ask to be served a drink water or tea. Not everybody looks on the website so I had no idea what the omakase would consist of. Also based on what’s listed on the website for omakase, there were two items that were not served and instead was replaced with something else, which should’ve been mentioned by the chefs but nobody said anything. I understand omakase is based on what’s fresh for the day but it would’ve been good to let people be aware of the changes. Also usually omakase restaurants serve the dessert last, but this place serves miso soup last. I don’t mind that but just not what I’m used to with omakase. The group that was seated at other side of the bar had arrived later than 5:30pm, but they were consistently served the food earlier than us which I thought was very odd. Overall would I come and try this place again? For the price point yes, I would try the $88 kappo menu next time. Also I don’t know if it’s sanitation issues but we were constantly trying to swat fruit flies away from our dishes, it was getting annoying. I hope that won’t happen to other patrons as my friend actually accidentally ended up swatting a fly which landed dead on her fish. She didn’t end up saying anything but I think that’s a problem this restaurant needs to address.
