Itasca State Park

Story

Itasca State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, and contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The park spans 32690acre of northern Minnesota, and is located about 21mi north of Park Rapids, Minnesota and 25mi from Bagley, Minnesota. The park is part of Minnesota's Pine Moraines and Outwash Plains Ecological Subsection and is contained within Clearwater, Hubbard, and Becker counties.Itasca State Park was established by the Minnesota Legislature on April 20, 1891, making it the first of Minnesota's state parks and second oldest in the United States, behind Niagara Falls State Park. Henry Schoolcraft determined Lake Itasca as the river's source in 1832. It was named as a National Natural Landmark in 1965, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. About 500,000 people visit Itasca State Park annually.HistoryApproximately 7–8,000 years ago, Native American hunters pursued wild animals for food in the Itasca State Park region. These early people ambushed bison, deer, and moose at watering sites and killed them with stone–tipped spears. The bison kill site along Wilderness Drive in the park gives visitors historical insight about this period.

See the headwaters of the Mississippi River. That is the big draw of this state park, but it isn't the only thing going for it. This is a great park to go and enjoy nature, see the forest and hike on some trails. The swim area is great, boat yours are a lot of fun. You can rent a bike if you didn't bring one. Both the visitors center are worth stopping in. They have a fun and informative area about local animals and the history of the area. The headwaters center has a nice cafe for lunch as well.

Plenty to do in this state park; Itasca is closest in size and scope to a national park, and with it comes a lot of people being car tourists. It's easy enough to escape them on one of the many hiking trail away from the headwaters area so if crowds aren't your thing, just know that it's what you make of it. The narrow roads are often shared with people on bikes, so drive carefully, especially on the wilderness loop that is one-way heading North and West from the Headwaters.

This Park is amazing. It's beautiful and going to see the Headwaters of the Mississippi River is a must-do if you are anywhere within a couple hours drive of the park. This Park is perfect for both a full or half day trip for non-outdoorsy people, and it is perfect for a days to weeks long vacation for the outdoorsy people. The staff is always friendly and helpful despite the volume of Summer visitors. It is a yearly must-go-to for our family and we look forward to the park every time.

Itasca State Park is awesome! Mary Gibbs Headwaters Cafe is terrible!! Go to Douglas lodge to eat! It's more worth the WAITING TIME TO BE SERVED. I live 20min from the park and there is NEVER enough help at the Cafe! You will wait 1/2HR just to place your order, if they aren't out of what you want, then wait 45min for it to come. On high volume weekends they only have 2 people working while another takes a break and their only open another HR! WELL IF ANYTHING THEY ARE CONSISTANT IN THEIR LACK OF CONCERN FOR FUTURE CUSTOMERS!

this is our favorite place to go. we love camping and hiking here, or even just taking a few laps around the wilderness drive. there's tons of trails to explore for all ability levels and of course there's headwaters of the most important river in the country. it's worth the trip every single time. we still haven't explored the whole park in about 10 visits over the last 4 years.
