There's no LTC facility that doesn't have staff shortage problems, so I'm not going to address that issue. The residents I've seen look pretty happy and well taken care of. It's in a really nice area and I see people with their walkers, wheelchairs and by foot going for an evening stroll or sun tanning on warm summer days.
If a family member is not the POA, the staff treats them like a stranger to their loved one. Even if they are the primary care giver in town. The facility including the management, has said because your not the POA for him we cannot disclose anything in regard to your loved one to you. So our loved ones is pretty much on their own. We are not allowed to care for them. Especially if the POA is out of province not here, Our loved ones is over medicated on antipsychotic drugs, my dad has had a few bad experiences here. But they continue to manipulate the situation. the staff and management, intimidates the residents. Aweful place to have to live out our last days. My dad can't even be happy spiritually, they have destroyed God's light in him. The strong smell of perfumes at the nurses station is overbearing, this is LTC not a salon, I see staff standing fixing their hair, self resumed, while the poor residents are nauseous from the strong scents, I can barely breath while trying to visit, nothing worst then the residents trying to eat their lunch, when along comes miss barbie smelling like a perfume bottle, there goes lunch. Have these care givers no respect for others sensitivity to to scents, as I was trying to visit my dad, a young worker entered his room, the strong scent from her perfume was so bad, my eyes were burning, my poor dad went into sneezing mode, they should not be allowed to wear scents in these facilities. They are so unorganized, the staff at the nurses station always looks so confused, asks a question, and they look at you like I DON'T KNOW ! . Before you know it your visit is over, and still no answer. Worst LTC facility. Sad part we are limited to our long term facilities and their availability.
My mother is here, and we have had a wonderful experience with Hogarth. The staff have are competent and caring. Originally, we had very serious concerns about having my mother in this facility. We saw the news reports, complaints, and heard the reputation from friends and were very resistant to having our loved one here. Hogarth is 4 times the size of other homes in Thunder Bay, with speciality units which is something to keep in mind when you hear the horror stories. They are working hard to try and change the facility, and the reputation. Our experience has been to polar opposite of what we expected, and we are very grateful to everyone there. Based on our experience, I would not hesitate to recommend Hogarth if you have a family member in need.
My mom has received excellent care since her admission nearly 3 months ago, during a particularly difficult time for LTC. I visit daily. The staff have been nothing short of exemplary. The food is of good quality and well balanced. Financing and all administrative matters have been handled efficiently. Any care enquiries have been handled in a timely manner to the satisfaction of mom and her family
A 2 star review is being generous. Care here is limited by staff shortages, inefficient management team, and the fact that the facility only maintains Ontario Minisrty of Health “minimum” patient to staff ratios.nBricks, mortar, and a new building do not create acceptable care.nHence the reason, that the administrator and some of the senior management team have since been removed and replaced with interim management by the Ontario Ministry of Health.nIn comparison with the much older, and now closed, City run Grandview Lodge, this facility has numerous deficiencies.nOur experiences with the senior management team, leave the impression that they refuse to be accountable.nBottom line, we would not at this time recommend this facility for long term care in Thunder Bay.nVerify the above, and more, by Googling Hogarth Riverview Manor, St Joseph’s Care Group, on CBC Thunder Bay.nEdited 2018/04/19
