Hands down my favorite burger in the city. It’s the most upscale fast food style burger and I mean that in the best way possible. The mac and cheese was so good too. My only super small critique is that the noodle shape is not my favorite for Mac and cheese. But the flavors and cheesiness were on point. The elote was tasty but would prefer it without the “rib” of the corn. The nachos sounded good but I expected pulled pork and didn’t feel like there was enough when it was actually served.
If you are reading these then PLEASE GET THE MAC AND CHEESE. I SWEAR TO GOD IT'S HANDS DOWN THE BEST MAC AND CHEESE IN THE CITY. Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast. This place is a little hidden gem. Every time I start eating the food I begin planning my next return. The mixed drinks have great balance and flavor. There's a gigantic liquor selection that doesn't disappoint. The burger is probably top 5 or even top 3 in the city. The chicken sandwich is even higher up there, right behind Lucy's and Welcome Back Lounge. The super soft buttery bun they use imparts 80% of the delicious flavor that keeps you coming back. I swear, they use the right toasted bun for these. But here's the best part. God himself must have blessed this Mac and cheese because it's the greatest recipe I've ever tasted. The twisted little flavor vestibules grab all of the cheesey buttery goodness. This place does not disappoint.
A friend of mine, had ventured in to their doors a week ago insisted I spend a Wednesday early evening with him there to check out their fare. Definitely not disappointed I must say. We started with a 4 Roses Old Fashioned with a half a dozen Oysters Rockefeller. Very tasty yet the seasoning seemed a bit light? The breading had almost no flavor, I was hoping for a larger impact. I ordered the mash potatoes with a ham gravy and the Prime Rib French Dip. This, my friend was a freaking outstanding pairing. I want to give the Gretel ten starts for this. The baguette was slighting toast but so soft! Seriously, that makes the sandwich for me. Our server, Maura I think her name was? Just a great presence and had a strong knowledge of the menu and making recommendations. Overall, what a fantastic place, vibe and overall experience. So glad to have visited. Can't wait to go back.
I like Gretel so much that I had to come back. When I was there last spring, I was only aware of the upstairs dining area. However, seating was unavailable when we arrived tonight. Of course, we did not have a reservation. Gretel was our second stop of the night. We headed downstairs for cocktails until a table opened up. It is very cozy downstairs, and it felt like I was sitting in my living room listening to music and enjoying an Old Fashioned with a friend. I was so comfortable I did not want to leave when our table became available. If you are looking for a late-night snack, try the pork belly nachos. The appetizer was shareable, and more than enough food for two people. The handcrafted cocktails are delicious, and we only needed one. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by. Street parking is available.
This is a contender for the top burger in Chicago…double patty burger cooked to absolute perfection, toasted buttery brioche bun, and 2 slices of cheese will send you. Would also highly recommend the french onion soup. The drinks were phenomenal. The chevron was delicious and complex and the hellion was a perfectly balanced spicy and smokey tequila drink as well.
Impressed by the decorations of this place. We found this place when we were searching for a restaurant bar near the place we were invited. When we stepped into this place the dim light with all-the interior lighting were looking beautiful! Our burger and Cesar Salad with Chicken were good and tasty! Our server was very polite and hospitable.
10/10! We got the burger, chicken Sammie, Mac and cheese and wedge salad. All were 10/10 amazing. And the bar was very impressive - never seen anything like it. Can’t wait to go back! Such a cool atmosphere.
Hold up! If you’re in Logan square and looking for the perfect bite, here’s the place to visit. Gretel is simply amazing! The lobster roll is insane and the burgers are even better than small Chevalle yet the atmosphere is cool and relaxed with the most amazing bar for Bourbon and otherwise all other booze available. Oh, the Mac n cheese is insane too. Tell Ari Isaac sent you, she is a great host behind the bar. Run don’t walk!
This was a very pleasant experience! The food was great. Definitely a shout-out to the burger which was delicious. The place does not do reservations so be prepared to wait quite a bit for the table.Food: 5/5
Located in Logan Square, this gastropub is the real deal. Interesting food items such as Oysters Rockefeller, ramen, hummus, fried chicken, burger and even a Chicago hot dog. It's not very big which makes it cozy and dark since the walls are painted black! Huge wall of whiskey behind the bar with a rolling ladder that the bartenders use. Nice craft beer selection even tho I had to order 3 different lagers until that had one available. The food tho is the star. Everyone at our table ordered the burger which was fantastic. We did try the Chicago Dog which was grilled to perfection. We all had their shoe string fries which were plentiful and delicious. We went around 445pm on a Sunday and were lucky to find a table since they do not take reservations. People were waiting when we left. Plenty of street parking available. If you want good food in Logan Square be sure to check this place out.
