Story

Gloria was born in a small town in Zacatecoluca, El Salvador. During her childhood she spent time on her grandparent’s corn farm where she learned to make traditional Salvadorian tamales wrapped in banana leaves, as well as many other family recipes. In 1973, at the age of 13 she emigrated to The United States with her family. They lived in North Hollywood, California where Gloria began her career in the food and service industry. She waitressed and bartended at various high end restaurants throughout Hollywood, eventually working as a personal organizer for David Hasselhoff; this included preparing meals for the celebrity and his family.

Gloria eventually moved to Oregon with her daughter Jenny. To better know her neighbors Gloria held a party where she prepared nostalgic foods from her days in El Salvador. A friend who attended the party suggested that she take her food to the local farmers market. She accepted the advice and soared in popularity. She found herself supplying orders for several supermarkets like Zupans, New Seasons, and Food Front. To keep up with demand Gloria opened a small kitchen in downtown Beaverton in 2003. Over the past 13 years the kitchen has evolved into a well-loved café. Never intended to serve patrons the café itself is very small (6 tables, 1 electric 4-burner stove) and is maintained by close friends and family. Despite its size and skeleton crew of no more than two people at a time it has gained a reputation for bringing a taste of El Salvador to the suburbs of Beaverton.
