Equitable Life of Canada

Poor record keeping practice. I understand that insurance agent has a high turnover rate and cannot be a reliable source when you need to inquire about your own policy. But when ask with the head office about my policy they are unable to provide the 10-year detail about the policy performance (it has an investment portfolio), top up with long response time making Equitable Life just another insurance company that has poor post-sale client relationship.

Horrible at paying claims. Prices maybe lower but the service isn’t close to the bigger companies. Sometimes its worth going with the more prominent companies. Have had issues with claims payments for massage for the past three years.

I haven't been with Equitable long and its hard to judge them to harshly at this point, however, some things I've noticed that I'm not happy with. When submitting small chiro claims ($25-$45) electronically, they accepted and processed re-payment quickly, within 2 days. I recently submitted an optical claim for $200 (scanned both a personalized summary and original receipt of my transaction) and its been pending and under review for sometime. I can appreciate a bit of extra checking with the higher amount but clearly with the paperwork submitted, it shouldn't take long to process. This situation leads me to my other issue. Any employee insurance plan I had in the past offered direct billing for optical but Equitable uses a service called theclaimsXchange.com. On the surface the service seems decent but I called 7-10 vision care providers and most hadn't even heard of it, let alone use it. I asked Equitable if they could provide even one place that uses the service in my area (Mississauga) but they couldn't. They suggested I visit a number of vision centers and explain to them how the claimXchange program works and have them sign up for it as a merchant. I laughed at that suggestion because it's not my job to inform and try to convince merchants to use a service. Overall I'm not impressed with Equitable so far.

It's always a roll of the dice whether or not your claim will be paid. It doesn't really seem anyone at Equitable really has a grasp that the errors they make affect people and their families. Very disappointed.
