Story

At Dutchie's Fresh Market we are committed to bringing customers the highest quality products at the best value for their money. We bring in product daily to ensure quality and freshness of our goods. At Dutchie's we also value our local suppliers and are committed to having them as a part of our store. We will always bring in food locally when in season.

Dutchie's Fresh Market was founded by Mike Renkema. His family has a rich history in the food service industry that started in farming and eventually expanded into the marketplace. The Renkema family started selling their crops in a small scale market booth in St. Jacob's over thirty years ago. Although the family originally tried to grow their own crops, to sustain their market demand they eventually had to import additional produce. Their market booth ultimately expanded into several other cities such as London, Stratford, and Elmer, etc.. Around ten years ago, Mike's father retired and the Renkema farm was sold, as Mike was financially unable to buy it outright at the time. So what did he do? He chose to start from the ground up, in Renkema tradition, starting in the market place with only a truck full of product. This market booth expanded into what Dutchie's is today! A full scale grocery store that brought market traditions of local products with the ease of grocery store shopping.

Dutchie's newest endeavor is raising their own quality meat for sale in the store. Our very own beef is locally raised on family farms and produced at local government inspected facilities. We have started to introduce our own locally raised lamb as well!

Have been shopping at the other Dutchies location for years. Wanted to see their new location. Still great prices, friendly staff. Freshest produce available. I guess its still quite new. Couldnt get chicken schnitzel until after noon. Was here at 1030am. Otherwise still one of my favourite places
Very valuable place for groceries but you need to cook them soon or they will go bad soon~ staff was really nice and they have tulips sold here from time to time~ oh they have very cheap berries basically all the time but be sure check the conditions of the berries or you would get a half-rotten box. Well picking out the best box is also a fun activity for me
Came here today for the first time and was shocked at the low prices. I came home, cooked my lean ground beef and was instantly grossed out, puddles of grease/fat. I looked online and instantly regretted purchasing anything from here... There's actually a whole Reddit thread of how terribly the owner treats his employees, the disgusting way he handles the food. Regardless of price, I could never shop here again strictly from a moral standpoint.
This company has a history of treating its employees poorly. To the employee holding up the signs on Aug. 20, 2022 about working 41 weeks and Dutchie's falling 6 weeks behind on your pay, here's what you need to know: 1. By failing to pay you, Dutchie's is in breach of contract. Therefore, you did not resign. This is a case of constructive or wrongful dismissal. In other words, they terminated you by forcing you to quit. If Mike Renkema and HR won't answer your questions, who is telling you that you forfeited your earnings? YOU DID NOT FORFEIT YOUR RIGHTS TO ANY PAY OWING and any suggestion of such is ridiculous and wishful thinking on their part! 2. They owe you all outstanding pay within 7 days. No notice period is required because they dismissed you. If you do not receive all wages within 7 days, file an ESA claim Employment Standards Act with the Ontario Ministry of Labour immediately. This can be done online submit as much supporting evidence as possible or by calling them. The Ministry will assign an Employment Standards Officer to your case and they will follow up directly with the owner Mike Renkema. Anything in any employment contract you may have signed that contravenes the Employment Standards Act is VOID. 3. Dutchie's owes you your ROE within 5 days of your last day of work, regardless of why you stopped working there. Failure to provide this may subject Mike Renkema to federal penalties of up to $2,000 or up to 6 months behind bars, or both. In addition, he could be forced to pay for any inconvenience caused to you like delays in receiving EI benefits. . You can also request your ROE from the government. This will allow you to start your EI claim and the government will follow up directly with Dutchie's for the ROE. 4. The ESA process can sometimes drag on longer than you feel comfortable with. Another alternative is to seek a free consultation on legal advice regarding filing a claim directly against Dutchie's. This is a slam dunk case of employee mistreatment that Dutchie’s will categorically lose. You will get all of your pay owing and they will also have to pay all your expenses related to your claim claim fee, counsel fee for representation, etc.. 5. If the information displayed on your signs is true, you have done nothing wrong and they are entirely at fault here. 6. Be sure to share the above notes with other employees that are being taken advantage of and mistreated by this employer. The more government and legal claims in process against them, the better the chances of the situation improving for future employees. Best of luck getting all of the money YOU EARNED! Until then, the signs are getting noticed. : It is unfortunate you had to resort to the uncomfortable situation of standing in front of their store with homemade signs, but garnering public opinion in this case is entirely appropriate. Customers deserve to know how employees are treated behind closed doors so they can make an informed decision about whom they choose to do business with. Just read the owner's laughable boilerplate reply, so felt I had to edit my review to respond in kind: 1. The facts are clearly presented. 2. Whoever is writing the owner replies shouldn't use such fancy words without first referencing a dictionary. 3. Highly appropriate to try and help people new to the workforce high school students and new Canadians. 4. I am providing an education for those who feel helpless and don't know where to find help. The Ministry of Labour is waiting to hear from you all. 5. You don't encourage your employees - you ignore and then intimidate them forfeit their rights? hoping they will go away unpaid. Looking forward to more employer responses, LOL!
This place was so good great service and advice ,thanks to the big guy he gave a me a great deal double smoked thick sliced bacon and other meats, and the cashier was so nice and friendly, I will definitely be back again.
went to this location as i was in the area but was a bit disappointed. their selection at this store is smaller than their sportsworld kitchener location and many of their shelves were empty. inside the store wasn’t very well kept and seemed a bit unorganized. besides that, they had great deals available that you can view from home on their website before you visit! the employee working there was also nice, greeting us and saying goodbye
Store changed owners and service and quality has gone down hill. Brown meat is bad.
The sirloin tip steaks AA grade or better we purchased for a dinner were too tough to eat. Ended up having a pizza party as dinner steaks had to be ground up the next day for shepherds pie. The tough steaks became the focus of dinner conversation between 4 families. Others had experienced the same. Never again will I shop in their store.
My boyfriend and I went in to the store. He made a bet that we wouldn't go "five seconds without finding mould." As soon as we walked in, there it was, the table of mouldy strawberries. We continued to the back and saw the hummus that was mouldy and hardly refrigerated. We brought the mouldy hummus to one of the employees who literally could not care any less. He took the hummus out of our hands and didn't say anything. Terrible quality food. Terrible service.
Don't recommend getting the berries when you think you're getting a good deal. Unless you plan to eat or freeze them the same day, they will be rotten by the next day. Very disappointed in that. The meat is still a good deal except the schnitzel which has reduced in size and the price is now 8/$10. This place is slowly going downhill. Miss the days of how it use to be when they first opened.
