Dover Straits

About

Freshness is our specialty! Voted Best Seafood Restaurant by Reader's Choice Daily Herald.

Story

THE HISTORY:
Since 1978, Dover Straits has proudly offered the finest selection of fresh seafood and exquisite service. Owned and operated by seven brothers from Greece, Dover Straits focuses on treating every guest like family. Having established ourselves as a premier seafood restaurant, the brothers opened their second location in Hoffman Estates in 1989, offering the finest & freshest selection of seafood, while providing guests with a comfortable & relaxed dining experience.

THE NAME:
If you were to tour Europe between England and France, you might have the opportunity to stand on the rocky cliffs of a body of water known as The Straits of Dover. This channel has the most ideal waters with just the right temperature for all types of fish, which is why we've proudly adopted the name to reflect our fine seafood.

THE SCENE:
This suburban seafood oasis caters to quiet couples and multi-generational families, with comfortable dining booths and a welcoming bar. Laden with rigging and relics, the sedate nautical atmosphere perks up with dancing to a live musical combo on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

THE FOOD:
Famous extensive menu of seafood flown in daily, Dover Straits also offers premium steaks, pasta dishes and other fine selections for the most discerning diner. The moderately priced menu of traditional seafood--along with several non-seafood selections--is headlined by higher-ticket items like Australian lobster tail and king crab legs. Appetizers include clam chowder soup and a captain's platter combo, a generous starter of standard oysters Rockefeller, clams oreganotta, crisp fried calamari and smoky barbecued ribs. The signature Dover sole amandine is firm-fleshed and succulent; flounder Wellington with shrimp, scallops and spinach in phyllo pastry with lobster sauce is a richer option.

Me & my family come here every year for Christmas eve. The food is amazing, the staff is phenomenal & most have been working there for a long time so they recognize us every time. The owner is always greeting guests at the front, gives a more genuine atmosphere. They have great seafood according to my family but I always get steak which is also great!
Solid old-fashioned seafood restaurant with a strong focus for rich and acidic dishes. This restaurant has been on my radar for years and what better way than to celebrate a special occasion with family. When you're on US-45 you'll be able to see the somewhat tacky crab pole standing by the restaurant with well lit signs indicating enter/exit with plenty of space to park. Walking in, the reception and staff are dressed very well. There's ambient music playing, and it's at an adequate volume to chat. Freshly baked bread was provided with prepackaged butter. Service between dishes seemed somewhat lax, though it was likely not their usual rush hour. We had their seafood sampler, which had some grill/charred salmon, calamari, shrimp, and scallops as an appetizer, then I had the white sea bass with lobster bisque and a side of rice to go with the entree. Don't sleep on that squeeze of lemon! Many of the dishes themselves are very rich, but the lemon elevates the richness of the dish by introducing some acidity into the meal. The grilled salmon in the appetizer was very tender, to the extent of tongue cutting it by roof of the mouth tender. The bisque is very creamy, but can easily be undermined by the soup crackers. I ended up using the lemon from the seafood sampler and thoroughly enjoyed the bisque. The sea bass as expected was fairly light but complements well to the sauteed mixed veg and creamy rice. Portions felt slightly inadequate at first, but made sense towards the end of the meal. I would not head here if I wanted to be filled up quickly. Overall an enjoyable experience.
We’ve go here occasionally, and this is a late review from one Saturday night dinner. First of all, wow!!! This place is huge!!! Parking is plenty— all the way to the side and back, so don’t worry about not having any spot during the weekend when you see lots of cars in the front. This restaurant has definitely been around for a long time. The interior has a classic seafood restaurant feeling, and again, it has plenty of tables and additional rooms every where you look. I agree with another review that this place has a different vibe from other regular restaurants. Nevertheless, everyone there is very friendly to our whole family. They make you very welcome and not awkward. Most of the patrons who eat there tend to be of older generations, but that just proves that this restaurant has many long time regular customers. That being said, the food is very good. It’s fresh and high-quality, which is essential when it comes to restaurant seafood. The flavors pop in an elegant way. We ordered shrimp de jonghe and escargot a la skordo, both of which you don’t find often at other restaurants around here. We also had stuffed shrimp bakers and fried calamari. As our main dish, we ordered Captain Selection, Sea Scallop and Soft shell crab, all of them are delicious. We finished up with Cheesecake. Overall the food is great, service is friendly and decently priced for a seafood dinner. We would go back again for sure :
Very nice seafood restaurant. The managers are very cooperative in satisfying customers needs. The restaurant is a very clean place. They have a separate lounge area for dining and enjoying their varied seafood choices. As well as listening to their musical accompaniments. I understand "landlubbers" choices are very good too. I've dined there a half dozen times in recent months and not been disappointed. They handled one of my dining parties of a dozen people with real grace.
Had a wonderful time! We celebrated a birthday on a Saturday evening. They have a live band and a packed dance floor full of people. We ate, drank and danced! Absolutely wonderful evening! The food was great Shrimp Fish and steak. Great service! Long time staff.
Food was amazing! I can't believe I waited so long to go here. Susanne our waitress was top notch! They even have live entertainment in the lounge. Absolutely will return!
Thank you Bill and George for all that you do. You and your staff are simply the best. This afternoon we had our DIL’s baby shower for about 25 in a private room off to one side of the main dining room and it could not have gone any better. George took very good care of my wife in the planning stages and guided her thoughtfully with kindness and respect. Our waiter Miguel was as efficient and warm as you would ever wish for on an occasion such as this. And us boys at the bar were very well cared for by our friendly and professional bartender along with Miguel. The food, as always, was perfect. Perfect. Thanks all for a remarkable afternoon. You are truly the best. Love to all. Bill and Gisela
I hadn't been to Dover Straits in years and was thrilled to find out that they are still there! It is owned by the same owners. The food was delicious and not overpriced. There is plenty of seating. The gentleman hosts are very courteous and professional. We went for our Anniversary and then again, for my Birthday. The first time we ate in the bar area. It's a great atmosphere! Beautiful bar! Terry was our server and she was fantastic! They have live music on the weekends. So glad Dover Straits is still there. We had a great time and we will definitely be returning!
The food is tasteless, made with minimal ingredients, and overpriced. The high rated reviews are old people with no taste buds. 19$ for watery, and undercooked salmon with lettuce. Just lettuce. The lobster bisque is worse than campbells and frankly, everything, even the steak, tasted like hospital food. Not to mention the martinis have no alcohol content and the waiter was rude, as he couldnt hear anything I was saying correctly. Extremely disgusting and dissapointing.
This being an upper dining establishment and relatively expensive, I found it very disappointing My Florida Mahi special menu was cooked to death leather. Flavor was very good. The prime rib was barely warm with a lot of gristle throughout the fillet. Servers were good but not very tentative. Again, considering this is on a higher scale than a family restaurant I would expect a much better meal and service.
