Devil's Lake State Park

Story

Devil's Lake State Park is a state park located in the Baraboo Range in eastern Sauk County, just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Devil's Lake State Park is the biggest state park in Wisconsin. It is around thirty-five miles northwest of Madison, and is on the western edge of the last ice-sheet deposited during the Wisconsin drift. This 9217acre state park is known for its 500ft quartzite bluffs along the 360acre Devil's Lake, which was created by a glacier depositing terminal moraines that plugged the north and south ends of the gap in the bluffs during the last ice age approximately 12,000 years ago. The sand at the bottom of Devil's Lake is thought to be deposited by glaciers. Devil's Lake is situated in the Baraboo Hills. The Baraboo Hills are thought to be much older than Devil's Lake itself; they are approximately 1.6 billion years old and were once part of the Baraboo Range which is thought to have been taller than the Rocky Mountains. In 1974, the National Park Service declared the Southern portion of the Baraboo Hills a National Natural Landmark. The Nature Conservancy also designated it as one of the Last Great Places; it is one of only 77 of these places in the world. Loess covers most of the hills and forms the parent material of a brown silt loam soil. During the fall, the park's brilliant foliage makes it a popular attraction. The lake is surrounded by a mixed conifer-deciduous forest and the Baraboo Hills are also home to one of the largest contiguous hardwood forests in the Midwest. Its scenic beauty along with its proximity to the Wisconsin Dells has made it one of the most popular of Wisconsin's state parks for both day use and overnight camping; the park receives over 1.2 million visitors annually.

Over all it was a great place. Too crowded for us and also the 11pm lights out did not work for us. The lake is crystal clear and amazing. The boat rentals are good but needs a lesson on how to treat people who is essentially paying for their jobs. The showers and bathrooms are good for the most part but could use more detail cleaning. The toilet pits are a joke. Might as well get rid of them and replace with modern style. Overall good spot to get away.

This place is beautiful! It has everything from a clean small beach, grassy areas and beautiful hiking trails. I loved bringing by two German Shepard dogs here to enjoy a nice summer day. I come from Illinois where state parks are completely free and was surprised we were charged to come into this park. However it was very very cheap and well worth the price of admission. My husband and I climbed the East trail because we were told it had more scenic views. I have not climbed the west trail to compare but I loved the view we got to see and we enjoyed watching the sunset from a cliff that overlooks the lake. I can't wait to come back! Wjy

It's always worth the drive from Madison to come up here. My wife and I love doing the loop around the lake with the climbs up the rock stairs on the SE shore as a great starting point. It's beautiful any time of the year, just be careful of the "stairs" in winter. The views are so lovely and it's always great seeing so many people from diverse backgrounds enjoying the park. You can climb, swim, kayak, float, run, hike and I've even seen people dive. It's all there, so go and enjoy it!

Easily one of my favorite state parks. I love that it is so dog friendly, all the trails are well marked and they have so much to explore. It's the perfect day trip. The Loop are the lake takes about 4 hours, but there are lots of places to stop and eat lunch and enjoy the views. I do recommend getting there early, as it is popular and the parking fills up quickly.

Beautiful views with plenty to do. Hiking trails reveal beautiful views of the lake, the bluffs, and woods. Trails are a bit of a challenge for the average person so be prepared with water and proper shoes. The trails up the hill have stone stairs that you need to be cautious about. The lake is beautiful and they have boat rentals that are convenient and not very expensive. $100 dollar deposit required for rentals. They take cards.
