Story

Our original Public House has been a vibrant fixture of the downtown Bend, Oregon scene since 1988. Not only were our very first beers brewed here – think Black Butte Porter and Jubelale – but we quickly became a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. While the beer speaks for itself through a total of 19 taps, our chefs also put the same quality and hand-crafted excellence into the cuisine. Our beer-centric menu features fresh ingredients, many sourced from local farmers, foragers and ranchers with whom the team has built strong relationships over the years. Most menu items are hand-crafted from scratch whenever possible, and several items are made with spent grain from the brewing process. Come visit us at Bend’s original brew pub and see where it all began.

Such a great spot! Great IPAs, fantastic food! Very impressed!nStaff are well trained too! We had a new guy helping us and we were his third order, but he already knew what he was doing!nWould definitely go back
Very good beers and a nice selection of food. Somewhat “commercial”/touristy, but otherwise worth checking out. MUST TRY the Hummus of the Moment appetizer plate. Ours was garlic hummus with roasted garlic cloves, marinated feta, artichoke hearts and olive tapenade. Served with cucumbers, carrots, and baguette toasts.
For years I’ve wanted to visit the home of the Fresh Squeezed IPA and the Black Butte Porter. I’d heard tales high and low about the infamous Deschutes Brewery. But alas, the tall tales and the urban legends did not live up to the hype.nnSometimes quality gets lost in the pursuit of expansion. I’m going off of a first impression here, mind you… and I’m approaching this review as if I hadn’t heard the name of the brewery before. Had I stumbled into this establishment without knowing who/what they were, I would’ve left the same review; its a rundown and somewhat dirty bar with a lackluster kitchen serving up an uninspired and stale menu. My steak sandwich was tolerable at best, overwhelmed by the horseradish, and embarrassed by that sorry excuse for a “house-baked hoagie.” Each successive bite was worst than the last as I attempted to save face in this brewery of my dreams. “Disappointed” doesn’t have enough syllables to sum up my disappointment. The steak was cut thin but it was chewy and cold, and there certainly wasn’t enough of it to justify the $21 price tag. I doubt the $3 bacon surcharge would’ve helped. And the fries? HEAVILY over salted/peppered. Like… my god, what did I do to offend you?nnThe only saving grace here was our server at the bar. The snooty staff at the front desk can shove right off. The overpriced merchandise, well, is overpriced. And the place could use a little maintenance given the national success Deschutes has seen.nnI thought this would be a trip to craft beer mecca. I even saved it for the last day of my work trip, hoping it would be a highlight. It ended up being the same feeling as that feeling when I realized that my three decades as a Mormon was a complete and utter lie.
Confession: black butte porter is my hands down favorite porter and Fresh Squeezed is my favorite hazy ipa and king crispy is my preferred daily drinker. soooooo let’s make sure you know that as you read. Good place for typical bar food. Service was great. Sampler was perfect because wife wanted to sample others too. Got the Nashville chicken sandwich with chips. All good. Not overly spicy hot. Not overly honey sweet. Just right of Chips were really good and wish I had more. Delish!!
We had dinner with family during the busy time but they still provided the good service and food, we enjoy delicious burgers and beer which staff recommend. It was really warm to enjoy our dinner time in the cold weather last night.
