So beautiful and peaceful. The long gravel road up keeps the traffic really low so you actually feel the quiet solitude. The road is in such good shape that even a small car could easily make it up. We hiked more than 8 miles and saw 8 other people we saw more deer and grouse than people.
FYI for folks who sleep in their vehicle, many of the campsites don't have level parking available, or you'll have to reposition your vehicle multiple times to find something close to level. I was pleasantly surprised to find the campground was about half full around 4pm on a Tuesday in early August, and there were a least a few sites that remained empty. Be prepared for colder temps due to the elevation.
Everything about this place is perfect. Photos are from Blue Mountain Lookout just above the campground. Hard packed dirt mountain, some loose gravel, lots of switch backs and room to pull over to allow oncoming vehicle to go by. This is a 10 star experience.
This is a very special place. Please, I ask of you from someone who has enjoyed this place for nearly 30 years, do take care of it. Respect the plants, the trees, the soil, the very sensitive stream & meadows. Respect others and campground rules... please! I promise you it's totally worth the small effort. Resist the urge to traipse thru the sensitive grounds & meadows. Love this place...soak it in! I still have so much to learn & enjoy. Please, let's take care of this place for others to find their own discoveries & wonders. Deer Park is certainly worth 5 stars!
One of the best drive-up campgrounds I've ever been to. Great views, and good hikes nearby. First-come, first served, with only 14 sites. No water, so be sure to bring plenty.
This place fills up fast so best to get here as early as possible if on a Friday. There aren't that many sites. If you get lucky, this campground offers some of the best views you will ever get from car camping, that isn't dispersed. If you stay here, I highly recommend seeing the sunrise or sunset from the top of Blue mountain. It's only a .5 mile round trip hike to the top, and 360 views. This is a delicate environment, so please be very careful to LNT.
Spectacular campground! At 5400ft, this is the highest car-camping location in Olympic National Park. It provides access to Blue Mountain, one of the easiest peaks to summit inside ONP borders. This makes it a popular spot for hikers and sight-seers, even though it lies some 45 minutes off the 101. The drive in is paved for a while, but when the true ascent begins, the road turns to dirt/gravel and narrows to one-car width at times, hugging the mountainside the whole way. That said, it's a gorgeous drive through rural countryside all the way from the highway. The campground is not large and can fill up quickly on the weekend. There is one indoor pit toilet for all to share, but it seems to stay reasonably clean. The campsites are nice and some have some really spectacular views. Just 5 minutes further uphill is a small parking lot just below the summit of Blue Mountain. From here you can see to Port Angeles, Canada, the San Juan Islands, and the Washington mainland. It's just a short walk up to the summit, where you get a full 360 view of the land, with the northeastern Olympic Mountains to the south. Must see at sunrise and sunset alike. Olympic Otter
We had a fantastic weekend at one of their sites. There are only 14 sites, so get there early. Maybe by noon on a Sun or Wed, before 10am other days. Nine dusty miles after 9 paved makes it a climb. Take an extra cruise up to Blue Mountain for an easy 1/4 mile loop to one of the highest spots for sunsets and stargazing. Bring water as there is none there. Also the park ranger is a great guy and runs a tight ship, so no overcrowding.
The road to this campsite is steep, narrow, windy, and unpaved. It's in good repair though, so just take it slow and you'll be fine. The view from the top is spectacular. The elevation means that it will be very chilly, especially at night, so be prepared for that. The sites have nice firepits. Build a big fire to fight the cold when you are hanging around in camp. The deer and chipmunks are used to people so keep food locked up and never unattended. Be sure to keep your tent closed up tight for the same reason. The viewpoint about the campsite is worth the drive and hike. Check it out! And speaking of hiking... There are lots of trails to choose from using this as a starting point. All of them very full of elevation changes. Do your research ahead of time and enjoy a walk in the fresh alpine air.
Deer park is a fitting name! Saw loads of deer the 3 nights we stayed. Great site for hiking and camping.
