I've been training at CFVM for a little over 3 years. When I started I was barely able to lift the empty barbell and throughout the years Rob and the other coaches have helped me grow tremendously. CFVM is a small box, with an amazing community and it has become my second home, and its members my second family. For new members and people who drop in, yes, Rob is an acquired taste. He's not the super friendly coach who will sweet talk you into lifting heavier. And yes, he's got a pretty caustic sense of humour. But if you listen to his advice or even better, ask for it! he will definitely help you become a better crossfiter.
I’ve been to 5 different CrossFit boxes for drop-ins and this one is by far the worst. First, the coach was late to the class by over 5 minutes. When you are paying for a 45 minute class, you expect to be able to utilize the entire time and not cut out the warmup to make up for it. I also arrived early to ensure there’d be enough time to pay for the class and sign the waiver, so I ended up waiting 15 minutes outside in front of a locked door with other members. During the class, I let the coach know that I had a few injuries and wanted to scale some of the movements to a lighter weight. The coach literally laughed in my face and said no. I had to Rx, no exceptions. I appreciate that he thinks I’m so capable, but I’d rather not make my injuries worse as I am still recovering. I would also rather scale a workout and be able to finish it rather than trying to Rx it and not getting through the entire thing. He also never supervised me or anyone else during any of the movements so I could have been doing all of them wrong and would not have known. Thankfully, I have great coaches in my home gym that helped me get to where I am today. If you are visiting Montreal, I am sure there are other boxes that are a lot better and more inviting, and would rather you scale to prevent an injury than tell you that you have to Rx. Looking at the other reviews, it looks like rude coaches is the norm here for drop-ins. I am highly disappointed that I spent $25 here.
I have only been to one CrossFit gym in the past, so maybe my word does not hold much weight but I do enjoy this gym have been attending for a little over a week. However, that’s not to say that I am in full agreement with how things are conducted during WODs. I’ll break everything down into pros and cons; Pros: - Decent range of equipment, including collar clips for the barbells much easier to use - Varied workout routines, which make each day pretty challenging - Coaches and clients are all pretty friendly, and I’ve even had fellow clients assist me with my form without having to ask. - Easy to pay I do cash and decent price points there’s an option for everyone. Also no contract necessary! Cons: - Sometimes I feel that the coaches are not attentive, which is worrying as I still do not know how to do all of the movements and my priority is to execute perfect form as opposed to being sloppy and over-encumbering myself. - Coaches can at times seem over-demanding, but I think this is just as a means of encouragement. I think it’s important to do the amount of weight you feel comfortable with, even if it is insisted you do more especially for those who have past workout injuries or feel injury-prone. - Not the cleanest gym, but pretty standard. If anything could be improved upon, I would say more attentiveness from the coaches with form. Also, less demands to add weight when one feels comfortable and can perform the exercise without any slip-ups would be ideal.
Dropped in and experienced a great gym and top notch coaching. Coach and owner Roberto gave helpful cues and clearly has significant expertise. He also made us feel welcome as drop-ins and gave us clear guidelines well in advance of showing up. Would love to visit again next time we’re in Montreal.
I've been training at Crossfit Ville-Marie for about a year and a half. I only have good things to say. Both Rob and Paul are excellent coaches -- smart, knowledgeable, funny... and mostly pleasant. Prior to joining this gym, I had tried + quit a number of gyms, never really took to it at all. But now I look forward to class and have a sincere + growing interest in fitness. Big recommend. It's a life changer. Ignore the haters.
We came for a month to Montreal and while staying in downtown we looked after a box to keep our CrossFit training, first we tried Mansfield but the box is on a basement and it's too small to enjoy. Then we went to CrossFit Ville Marie and we enjoyed the whole month training every day. The box is not as big as we are used to, but it's very well located and the coaches are great. Also we felt very well received by all the regulars. Roberto has his way, he seems distant but he is always pushing you hard and if you needed he will be all over you checking on every movement. Thanks Roberto and Seing!
Good equipment and good programming. The coach was welcoming and made sure I do all the exercises properly as a drop-in guest. The men's bathroom/lockers was the dirtiest I have even seen in my life. There was layers of dust and chalk everywhere.
The guy Roberto at this gym was very rude to me when I first arrived. Just visiting Montreal and was hoping to do a drop in at a box near me. Barely got in the door when he first got mad at me for not reserving online. Then he got mad at me for wearing my shoes outside.. then he just says they don’t take card and that I have to go to an atm if I want to join. I’ve never felt so unwelcome haha. Was like he would have preferred if I didn’t come. Can’t recommend this place..
Pretty underwhelmed by the hospitality shown here. I’ve been an avid cross-fitter for many years and frequently ‘drop-in’ at gyms all over North America as I travel often as a pilot and have never had issue. Was made to immediately feel unwelcome here as soon as I arrived - from the reviews it appears this is part of the norm. They don’t accept credit/debit and I was told right away I needed to go get cash. Not the inviting cross-fit community I’ve become accustomed to and will not be returning.
I am on a visit from the United States and wanted to drop in and was told they did not allow drop ins on Fridays. Because I didn't have internet connection I was unable to see this up front. I had walked 40 minutes to this gym as this was the closest one I could find. They indeed explained me how to get to another gym near, but that would have been an hour walking back. When I told them that, they still wouldn't make an exception and they just said: well, I'm afraid you will have to walk back home then. I am extremely disappointed. I have NEVER been turned away from a gym, and I travel a lot and have numerous gyms all over the world.i understand classes can get busy and it's a team workout, but they could at least let you stay and see if the class maybe is smaller that day and let you join in if it is so.
