Story

In the winter of 1974, Bob Frye started a small cross country ski rental operation out of the Sports Barn of Higgins Lake. Since then, with the help of his wife Lynne, it has grown to one of the premier cross country ski destinations in the Midwest, offering 19 kilometers of groomed trail, a full service day lodge and kitchen, a rental facility with 200 pairs of ski and snowshoe rentals, and a specialty retail store featuring dozens of top XC ski and clothing brands at very low prices.

To this day, people from all over the country (and sometimes other countries!) walk through our doors with the hopes of getting out on the snow and enjoying winter. With a vast variety of equipment to choose from, plus a fun, inviting atmosphere and weekend events, occasional night skiing, and daily lunch specials, there is truly something for everyone a the Cross Country Ski Headquarters.

We drove up for a day on the trails.  The owners and staff were great.  We had enough snow to enjoy a few skis with a break for lunch (their special was especially tasty after 5 miles on the trails).

Two of us even tried out the skating ski's (for free).  They fitted them up right with boots and skis and let them loose on the short course nearby.  What fun seeing Tim and Hank try this for the very first time.  We will all have to rent some as these trails are just perfect for this type of skiing.

Heading home we were pleased that we took the time and effort to enjoy the snow and hospitality.

Excellent place to buy skis. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. The gear is all of the best names in ski equipment. The prices are better than you could find anywhere else, especially if you purchase a package. They tailor your package to each person's individual needs. Love my new Fischer Spider 62 skis! Ready to hit the woods .

Bustling and lively but there is always someone to help you. Our service was excellent, knowledgeable & accomodating. You can try out the skis on their circular trail, including a small hill if you're brave. Their renting fees are quite reasonable & there's a lunch room with tasty choices. It seemed well stocked so we had no problem picking out boots, pants, gloves and poles to suit the skis. My husband and I spent a couple hours in this process & enjoyed it all.

The store has a great selection of ski and winter gear. They carry very respectable names in winter sporting equipment. They really shine in the service department though. Customer service has been top notch every time I've shopped there. They also have their own groomed trails. They are well cared for and kept up even in the summer for hiking and mountain biking.
