A Conservative Egalitarian Synagogue in Kingston, NY, welcomes all.
Congregation Ahavath Israel began in 1906. In 1926, after 20 years of meeting in various locations, including homes and storefronts, the congregation purchased its first permanent home, a former church on Wurts and Spring Streets in downtown Kingston. Our first full time rabbi was hired in 1937. In order to support our rabbi, the annual Thanksgiving Ball began and continued into the 1990s. The burning of the first mortgage was held at a gala affair on May 27, 1945. A Golden Jubilee Dinner celebrated CAI's 50th anniversary on August 19th, 1956. With increased growth, CAI had a need for a new home and a former church at 100 Lucas Avenue was purchased. The synagogue was dedicated on December 18, 1966 and a gala Dedication Dinner Dance was held in the Spring of 1967.
