About

We are a midwifery practice located in downtown Toronto, Canada.

Story

We are a group of nine midwives: Bridget Lynch, Jennifer Goldberg, Mary Fish, Fariba Shodjaie, Dione Amsterdam, Kristen Dennis, Elena Ikonomou, Alusha Morris, and Lauren McEachern. Becky Lambert is our current New Registrant, and Lisa Thacker will be starting her New Registrant year with us this fall. Tracey Reid is currently working as a locum in our practice.

In Ontario, a midwife is a registered health care professional who provides primary care to low-risk clients throughout pregnancy, labour and birth. Midwives also provide care to both client and baby during the six weeks following birth. They are available to clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week by pager.

Community Midwives of Toronto is committed to providing an inclusive, safe environment for all, including equitable treatment with dignity and respect for diversity regardless of a person’s race, citizenship, place of origin, ethnic origin, colour, ancestry, age, religion, family status, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, immigration status, size or level of ability.

In Ontario, if you see a midwife you will not see a physician unless there are concerns or complications. Most births are normal and there are no complications. If there are complications, midwives can consult or transfer care to a physician. Midwives provide safe and expert care to healthy clients and newborns.

The midwives at our practice speak English, French, Spanish, Farsi, Greek, Japanese and Dutch.

Mission

Ontario midwives provide care under a model and philosophy which includes the belief that people have the right to make informed choices.

Midwives are able to attend births at home and in the hospital, and at the Toronto Birth Centre. The hospital where we hold privileges is St. Michael's Hospital in downtown Toronto. Clients in Ontario under the care of a midwife choose where to give birth. Your midwife will assess your health needs and provide information to ensure you can make a safe and informed decision about where to have your baby.

We had the lovely experience with Lisa, Alusha and Kristen. Everything were great: pregnancy, labour, postpartum recovery. I felt very confident about their recommendations and felt a big care.
This community is great. My wifes midwife Sarah was spectacular. She was so nice and professional in her dealings during my wife's admission till when she delivered our baby boy. Thanks to Community Midwives of toronto. You guys are the best.
Had the best experience with Alusha, Kristen and Kaia. The care during the appointments, birth, and home visits was the best, and the help with breastfeeding was invaluable. I can’t say enough good things about my experience!! Marly
I switched to midwifery care somewhat late in my pregnancy, and I'm really happy I did. I had some unexpected minor complications at the very end and Alusha, Kristen and the student Shawna were so supportive and informative. I ended up being more involved with the hospital system than I would have liked but the shared care with the midwives made the experience closer to what I was hoping for. The home visits were incredible in the first few days after birth and the help with breastfeeding was invaluable. My baby and I were so well cared for! Our last appointment was bittersweet because it was nice to hear how well my son was doing but sad to say goodbye to the people who were with him from the beginning.
My Midwife Fariba was excellent. I received extensive care, and her knowledge and years of experience are so valuable. When I experienced a superficial medical issue at 36 weeks, Fariba acted fast and we were able to get to the issue as quickly as possible, and change my birth plan to be safest for me and the baby. She has a wonderful bedside manner and always made me feel listened to, giving me her full attention. My favourite part of this process was the 6 week postpartum care that my baby and I received. I didn't have to leave my bed for a full 5 days, and I felt completely supported and cared for. Kaia was also present at my birth, and visited my home postpartum. She gave excellent care as well. If you have any questions outside of clinic visits, you are encouraged to call at any hour and your midwife or another will call you back promptly. They also offer a zoom prenatal education class, which we found helpful and informative, but it wasn't a very modern presentation. At the end of that day, yes, I recommend Community Midwives if you are interested!
On to my second pregnancy with my midwife from this clinic. I love them dearly. They treat me incredible
I had an excellent experience working with Lisa, Mary and Cello - such a knowledgeable and compassionate team! The support provided throughout the pregnancy, delivery and postpartum was so valuable. Highly recommend signing up with the clinic.
I can't say enough about my care and experience, though nearly two and a half years ago. My assigned midwives and midwifery student were an incredible team, and offered much more personal care during pregnancy and through my initial struggle in the first few weeks postpartum. For compassionate, empowered and informed care, I highly recommend Community Midwives.
Everyone here is very lovely and highly experienced. My first birthing and after-care experience was so positive, and I give credit to the support I received from my midwifery team Becky, Tracey, Elena. They were patient and professional with all my questions and helped guide me through the different stages. Their approach is very mother-centric, and I felt affirmed and empowered with my decisions.
Midwives are super women. The care that I received from Alusha Morris was phenomenal. She was attentive, personal, caring and knowledgeable. Midwives provide the best care for women during birth and especially for the postpartum period. They surround you and your baby with care and support, making you feel safe and secure.
