Story

COCO Cafe is a project of Cedar opportunities Co-operative. Our mission is to operate a successful social enterprise that provides employment, training, and socialization opportunities for people with developmental disabilities within their community. Cedar Opportunities Co-operative (COCO) was established in 2007 by families in the rural community of Cedar, all of whom shared a vision of full inclusion for their family members with developmental disabilities. In June 2011 COCO Café opened its doors as a realization of this concept. From its initial café operations, Cedar Opportunities Co-op has grown its services to offer a full catering, and a retail food department. We pride ourselves in continuing to grow the social aspect of our enterprise in the coming years. COCO continues to provide many permanent employment opportunities for our staff with developmental disabilities and looks forward to expanding opportunities in the future.

In 2014 COCO Cafe provided approximately 3300 hours of supported employment. With increased cafe business and catering operations in our community in 2015 our supported employment was increased to approximately 4400 hours. In 2016 we project increase of additional 25%, to 5500 hours by extending our operational hours to include dinner service and by continuing to grow our catering department.

If you’re looking for a spot that feeds your soul as much as your stomach, Coco Café is it.nnFrom the moment you walk in, the cozy, welcoming atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve just stepped into a friend’s kitchen.nThe setting is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to hunker down with a book or catch up with a loved one. But what truly makes this place special is the wonderful staff and their mission. Knowing that this café is a social enterprise providing employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities makes every cup of coffee taste that much better.nnMy favorite dishes are the Mexican breakfast bowl and the falafel wrap! You guest it right veggie options available.
Had the Chicken Caesar Wrap and coconut curry soup combo. Both were great, but the wrap fell apart easily. Maybe needed some more sauce to bind it better.nnWould love to see a Buffalo Chicken Caesar Wrap; would put this over the top.
Delicious potatoes and they weren’t even deep fried. We liked the smoothie too. Eggs benny was 5/5
Great food. Loved our west coast eggs benny and farmer’s breakfast wrap - the house made maple sausage was fantastic. Great hash browns, and friendly, flawless service. Lots of sunny outdoor seating!
I pinned this place for my one day trip to Nanaimo and stopped by to have breakfast, I’ve ordered two Benedict eggs and asked for one half boiled and the other full. But both turned to be half and due to tight schedule didn’t bother to ask for change. Also the bread was soaked in sauce which should be prevented by placing other ingredients between. Stuff were friendly.
