This fine restaurant or formally fine, was sold shortly after the floods or they're both this. This was in the spring of 2017. Until that time it was run by a husband and wife who's cooking was absolutely superb! Plus their pricing was great and they used very little oil and put large amounts of the food itself be its fish or beef or lamb or chicken, they put so much food in just one bowl that this alone and without oils but lovely spicing was I treat that I brought so many people to this place. Additionally they were a bring your own wine restaurants or beer which was lovely as well. The last time I went back it was new ownership and those standard Bulls full of no oil and lots of food now the standard sort of washed out little bits of food and lots of oil kind of thing and I was highly disappointed and I felt betrayed that my friends that ran out of restaurant that I felt became my friends has simply changed over and not told me personally that it was sold off. Wherever they move to in this city no matter how far I would go there but I don't know where they are. I will not return to this restaurant cuz I can get the same average everyday quality of consumer Indian food all around me in the center of Montreal I don't need to drive a good long distance to this restaurant that I used to drive to in order to get what I considered to be inadequate and quality. And after it was sold I feel a loss for such an excellent restaurant and exquisite cooking that was no more and nowhere to be found. So in its present format. And it's past format I would give it a 6 on 5 without a doubt! Long Live Chef Akbar Restaurant the king is dead.
I tried this place because I've been craving Indian food for a while and I was sorely disappointed. Not only did they give me two of the exact same menu items out of the three different ones I ordered, the quality of the food is poor. The vegetable korma was not only flavorless and pale in color, it was made with a frozen vegetable mix. The texture of large, previously frozen carrot chunks and limp green beans was a massive turnoff. The naan breads are small and very tough. To top it off, delivery took almost an hour an a half but the driver was very nice. Not worth the money I spent. I don't enjoy spending that much money on food made from frozen vegetables, it's culinary laziness.
To all customers who used to love this place BE WARNED. Was a loyal customer of this place for years - almost 10 years in fact - until today. Went there today ordered my usual when I found out the place is now under new ownership. The quality and portions now don't compare to what they were under the previous owner; what used to be so delicious that we would drive 45 mins each way for this place is now utterly revolting. The portions are small and the taste is disgusting I honestly though they got it from a TV dinner box and just reheated it. Nothing was even close to being the same. Very very disappointing and at the same time very sad. I will be looking for a new Indian restaurant as I refuse to go back even if they paid me. - To acknowledge the response from the owner; the dishes ordered were the Navrattan Korma, the Butter Chicken, Lentil soup, Onion Bhaji. As I mentioned in my original above review I've been coming to chef Akbar for years and the food was consistently beyond delicious. The meals I had under the new ownership on July 22 were nothing like what they were for the several years I had been going to chef Akbar.
Great little place...and emphasis on the word little. Feels like I'm going over to a friend's place and their mom is cooking up a storm in the kitchen. Everything I've eaten here has been delicious. I highly recommend the samosas as well as the goat. Really an outstanding little resto.
After reading raving reviews of this restaurant, we decided to give it a try with some family members. It was the complete opposite of what we thought it would be. We waited an hour for our food, the portions were measly and the quality was questionable. I've been to other Indian restaurants were the meats were tender and had the perfect meat to sauce ratio. Not six small pieces of paneer or chicken with bare marinade swimming in sauce. The remaining sauce became a waste. The biryani was also questionable. For two dollars more, I can get triple the portion and more flavorful dishes elsewhere. Also I was told I would get two whole naans for every dish I ordered butter chicken and palak paneer instead I got two naans cut in half. What false advertising! I'm sorry to sound so brutally honest but if it is so good, what are people going for? It was also not appreciated to be bothered and obstructed by presumably your children.
Hoped for good food from a "Mom & Pop" place. Was disappointed. If you gauge an Indian restaurant on their butter chicken -- then this is now the new low for us. I had a biryani, and it was equally un-enjoyable. It's as if all the ingredients were there, but somehow it came out wrong.
This place is great! The food is always really good and its small and simple restaurant which makes it that much more authentic. Love that you can bring your own wine. I would say the value for your money is way up there. Its hard to find good food and a BYOW for reasonable prices these days.
Probably the best traditional Indian restaurant in Montreal! The food is more than amazing, nice quality ingredients and generous portions! And do not listen to the previous reviewer - the service is excellent!
Authentic indian food. The fish curry was amazing.. more traditional home cooked indian food... like spicy shrimp... or curry chicken... ask for it "like your mama made it" Hot... excellent.. and holy cow.. nice and hot..
I loved the food prepared freshly for us. Lamb was awesome and made in the same authentic dhaba style as back home dhabas on highways. Loved it. Fully recommend.
