Chateau Lacombe Hotel

Story

The Chateau Lacombe is a hotel in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.DescriptionOne of Edmonton's major hotels located in Downtown Edmonton, the Chateau Lacombe was first opened on 28 December 1966 by the Canadian Pacific Hotels Corporation. It features 307 rooms in the 24-storey cylindrical tower topped by Edmonton's only revolving restaurant, La Ronde, which offers sweeping views of both the city's downtown core and the North Saskatchewan river valley below as it makes a full rotation every 90 minutes.Canadian Pacific Hotels bought Canadian National Hotels, which owned and operated the nearby historic Hotel Macdonald. After CP Hotels and Resorts purchased Fairmont Hotels, the newer Chateau Lacombe was sold to investors and it was rebranded the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe. It was sold again in mid-2010 for $47.8m to local company Hargate Properties who retained the affiliation with Crowne Plaza Hotels but the new owners went into receivership in November 2011. The purchase of the hotel by Kevyn Frederick in 2010 later was discovered to be part of a large mortgage fraud in the Edmonton area. The hotel was bought out of receivership by the new ownership group for $27.5m in 2012, and in May 2013 the hotel was relaunched as an independent hotel.NameThe hotel is named after Father Albert Lacombe, an Oblate missionary and pioneer priest instrumental in the foundation and settlement of Alberta in the late 1800s.

I stayed here for a work conference with a few colleagues, allowing me to experience multiple rooms on different floors. Much to my surprise, the reality of the Chateau Lacombe was vastly different than it was portrayed online - this is a very old and dated hotel. The website states that it is “Edmonton’s finest downtown hotel” which is simply not true. The location and the views are great, but other than that, you’re looking at about a 2 star stay. The rooms are not as pictured - you do not get 4 big fluffy pillows per bed, but instead, 2 small flat ones. The beds are small, uncomfortable, and you have to snuggle into them with a throw blanket and about 3 top sheets as they aren’t even made with real bedding. The bathrooms are incredibly dated and ours was far from clean. The towels are so thin that you can see through portions of them. I’m not convinced our room had ever been dusted and our phone was merely a decoration as it didn’t work at all. The gym is about 35 degrees and some of the machines don’t turn on at all. And finally, if you’re planning on using the elevator, make sure you factor at least an extra 15 minutes into your day I wish I was kidding - only one of the three work at a time for 24 floors. If you’re looking for a convenient location downtown, cheaper rates, and are unbothered by all of the above, this might be the place for you! Otherwise, there are far better options that constitute a “fine downtown hotel” in Edmonton.
Hotel was nice and staff super!nThe parking garage was being renovated without any signage up.nWe stayed in a pet friendly room which was ok but the beds were older and pillows could have been newer. But all in all it was a good stay.
My partner and I booked a room directly with this hotel over the phone - we made one thing very clear. We were celebrating our anniversary and specifically asked if there was room service as this was something we wanted as part of the experience. We were informed that there was room service available at the hotel from 5:30am to 10pm and we could use at our discretion. Upon checking in, we were informed there was a “self parking” fee which is absolutely ridiculous given the amount we were charged for the room. Fine, whatever. We went up to the room to find they had put us right in front of the elevator on the concierge floor. With a 2 inch gap between the floor and the door, you can imagine how nosy it was all night for us. We were woken up multiple times. I called down to the front desk to complain, they did send security up but it’s not like they caught anyone. The disruptions were not few and far between all night. And especially considering we informed the person who made our booking that we were celebrating our anniversary. Once we got into the room and called down to the front desk to order room service, they told us it actually was not even an option! We had to choose from the restaurants in the hotel and pick the food up ourselves. I really wasn’t impressed. We were also told breakfast was served on the concierge floor but come to find out later there was a much more extensive breakfast offered on the lower levels. We weren’t informed of this upon check in. Spending as much as we did on the reservation, I was appalled to see the state of the shower. The grout was covered in mould, the room was outdated and poorly kept up in terms of appearance, and overall this experience really put a damper on our special night as spending that much on a sub par experience in a run down room after being lied to about room service was completely disheartening. I would also like to add that the toilet was disgusting - under the rim there was clear brown residue left over from whatever abysmal job housekeeping did cleaning. Normally you wouldn’t see this but I had dropped something on the floor between the toilet and the shower and with that viewpoint I was able to see that. There were also finger prints all over the windows and tv which had not been properly cleaned before we checked in. I would avoid this hotel if you are able, they compensated me $40 for the additional “romance” package they gave us with plastic rose petals from the dollar store but I’m still not impressed. The rooms are obviously run down, and for the price you’re paying I was expecting a lot better.
I haven’t stayed here yet but will write an updated review when I do, but I spoke with Kat on the phone to book my reservation and she was FANTASTIC. She answered all of my questions enthusiastically and I had a lot of questions and she was overall just very kind and knowledgeable. I am excited for my stay simply because of how great Kat was I can only imagine the rest of the staff is aswell.
Both times we’ve stayed here on the concierge lounge level where no minors are permitted. On both of these occasion’s there were children running down the hallway and also in the lounge area during the continental breakfast and the evening snack/wine service, helping themselves to the food and drinks. Nothing was said by the staff about this. I sent multiple messages to the hotel concerning this and have not received a response.nnThe beds are not comfortable. Good location down town and underground parking is $25/day.nFor the extra cost to be on the concierge lounge and having kids running around and helping themselves to the food in the lounge area, it is not worth it. We also tried the breakfast buffet at the restaurant and even though you get a discount when you stay at the hotel there was a very poor selection basically scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and dried up waffles, granola bars and bananas, apples and oranges.
