I've had an excellent experience with the courses offered at the Centre Saint-Louis. The teachers really went above and beyond, especially considering the limited means of the school commission. It's true that there are a lot of anglophone students, and especially among the lower level classes a lot of English is spoken during the breaks. But there is only so much the school can do about that. In my mind, it's really up to everyone to kick themselves in the behind and start using their French once it is sufficient to say more than oui and non.
We my wife and I have been attending for a week and a half. $55 a course is really cheap for a Canadian. We met the vice-principal on the first day and she was super friendly. We have Luc Trudeau, and he cares a lot for his students to learn. He is a patient teacher. The philosophy is to explain everything in French which is a bit jarring at first but really good in putting French in your head. Make sure your social connections outside of the school are French to supplement your French learning.
Teachers are hit and miss, and the more "experienced" teachers get priority over the younger, newer, sometimes more enthusiastic teachers. Classes are very cheap at $50 for two months. You get out of the school what you put into it. People do tend to speak English/Spanish most of the time. But in order to learn French in Montreal, you have to actively work on practicing it regularly.
My wife and I had a very good experience at Centre St. Louis in 2017-18 and I would highly recommend it. If you work hard at it and also practice speaking french outside of school hours regularly you will be successful. The staff are very helpful. The bad reviews are from people who thought it would be easy. It's not easy. J'aime l'école ! David Puccini
The moment I think there will not be any worse teachers, the next higher level surprise me, although the teachers at levels 6 and 7 should have better understanding and command of the language ... sadly they do not in level 7b at the moment the teacher is guessing with us the right answers for the grammaire questions which makes the session boring and tedious. On the other hand you find Teachers like Nicholas which is the best i have seen till now, engaging the students and not like others who makes u reach for ur phone out of boredom. I hope they fix their act bcz exams do not push u to study as between levels 1-5 they are ridiculously easy and demanded no study whatsoever from my side at least. Not much activities that is interesting out of the school too also was surprised to know that this is one of the best schools, i had better proper french language education in my non francophone country from proper french teachers who were strict and engaging. I am sure there is other good teachers that I haven’t encountered but that’s my experience.
The school and teachers are great, The receptionist is rude and unhelpful, makes you wait and rarely helps with anything. Her manager always has to step in. It’s a shame to see immigrants being welcomed here with that attitude.
The teachers are very nice and its a good school. However, the director there is very rude and can hinder your learning and your experience at the school. Think twice before you attend there for this reason!
Best place to learn french.
