Very buttery scallops st. jacques. Kitschy maritime-themed decoration, but cool concept of eating aboard a ship. Dark dining room. Very few customers on a weekday evening. An intriguing story of the real-life Captain John. Prices appropriate for seafood.
We had dinner at Captain John's once and felt that the food tasted like we were eating at someone's home rather than in a restaurant. We won a contest and ended up back at the restaurant again. It was something different and part of Toronto's waterfront for so long. Now there is an empty void in the harbour.
Unfortunately, this longstanding floating landmark has been shut down by the City of Toronto in an apparent dispute over unpaid debts and taxes. The owner has until 07.27.12 to remove the vessel and everything else from its dockage - or find a new owner willing to assume financial liability.
I was on the boat in the fall of 1982 I remember the food as being very average. The dining room had a very musty smell and it was cold and damp, I never went back.
the worst food I have ever ate. Nothing is fresh, the overcook everything!
