Awesome climbing gym - I go here whenever I’m in Montreal. I love the communal chalk bins which are unfortunately getting removed very soon. The atmosphere is great, however the amount of chalk particles in the air isn’t the best. The grading is relatively soft compared to other gyms I’ve been to. I sent a couple of V5s and even a V7 when V4-6 is my max - but hey, it’s a nice confidence boost! All in all, I’d come back again next time! I went back today to buy the chalk they sell - it’s so soft and fluffy!
Amazing place! Need to train strength and is looking for weights, dumbbells, pull-up bars, pinches, and campus? They have it! Slabs, steep, vertical? They have it! Ow and also a kilter board Fancy for a drink? They have it! Even beer on a tap for the old dogs and weekend warriors like me! They have it! Even hipster kombucha! Gets bored too easily? 3 times a week you get a new section changed! Hole gym changed within a month! Dammm Don’t like any of that? Go get a sauna! Duuuude! They have it! And an outdoor climbing area for the summer grind!
Let’s boulder in the city center of Montreal ! It has everything you could need from a sauna, training area, 3 indoor rooms of bouldering, a outdoor wall, kilter board, infinite chalk, friendly staff and a place to enjoy your lovely made food&coffee Lot’s of different style of boulders from painful small edges, skin destroyer sloppers, scary volumes and even some crack Many slab and corners but not much of overhang..
I've visited cafe bloc only once now so, as a caveat, my experience may be unique to that particular day. I generally enjoyed the gym and had a nice time. the community there seems great and I didn't use the sauna but that is a very nice touch. I do wish there were more interesting V3 and lower problems. I found them to be mostly jugs, often on overhangs sorry if my terminology here is wrong!. felt more strength based rather than balance type problems, which are my favourite. a much larger critique for me is the amount of chalk in the air. i noticed it visually the second i walked in and had a harder time breathing the longer i was there. this may be the one thing that stops me from coming back, it was seriously unpleasant. I've been to many other gyms and have never seen it that bad! i think the main culprit is the large communal chalk bins. i understand the appeal but i just don't think it's worth it. people are more careful with their own chalk and when it's in smaller quantities in a contained chalk bag. i think not having the large bins would greatly improve the situation, and with covid still a thing, that seems wise anyway.
I’m not an experienced climber. I’ve been climbing a handful of times over the last 4 years. The environment at Cafe Bloc is super welcoming. It doesn’t feel like you’ll be judged if you’re a newbie, and the folks with more experience are willing to help out an encourage. The routes are fun, and seem to change frequently enough that you won’t get bored.
Amazing climbing gym. Easy to walk in and get a day pass. We showed up late and because of their closing time of 11pm we had so much time to climb. There were so many routes that even with a fair amount of people around we felt like we had enough to do. The collect part was the small rooftop climbing section they had. So fun. Would recommend to any passerby or local.
My go to gym these days. Convenient location, clean, fun route settings, spacious -------update after spending several sessions at the gym over almost a year, one thing I want to mention is that most of reception staffs are not very friendly. Not much willing to listen to customers. whenever I ask some questions in person or on the phone, I feel like I'm asking some stupid questions. I don't feel welcoming, they just gather and chat as a group. I go many different climbing gyms, cafebloc is the only place I feel that way. Hope this will be improved.
Amazing bouldering gym, but an even better place to make friends. Everybody is so friendly at cafe bloc, they will cheer you on. It's fun to be there even if you're a novice, and you can get a drink and a meal at the end of your session!
Good vibe, fun problems, with a nice added bonus of having some drink / food items on the menu. Wide selection of shoes if you were looking to buy, and physio / ostheo onsite for weekday business hours. Beware that weeknights may be pretty packed, but since the communal chalk was taken away air quality no long depend on how packed it is. Recommend checking it out!
It sounds like it's a great climbing gym, but I wouldn't know. I checked their times on google, and their website, about 20 times, read reviews, read faq, etc, and nowhere did I see any notice that they would be closed except for people participating in a comp this past Saturday, until I got to the door. If it's posted on Instagram you can't tell. Fair enough you've got a special event, but let me know in obvious ways BEFORE I do a trek across the whole city of Montreal.
