OUR ARTISTIC MISSION

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre creates vital Canadian theatre by developing and presenting voices that question sexual and cultural norms. Built on the political and social principles of queer liberation, Buddies supports artists and works that reflect and advance these values. As the world’s longest-running and largest queer theatre, Buddies is uniquely positioned to develop, promote, and preserve stories and perspectives that are challenging and alternative. Buddies achieves artistic excellence through its mainstage season programming, artist-residency program, and youth-based initiatives. Buddies serves a broad segment of the population who share a passion for theatre that celebrates difference.

OUR VALUES

Buddies in Bad Times Theatre has identified three core values that serve as guiding pillars for all our activities and operations.

DIFFERENCE: With our art, we simultaneously celebrate difference and question the mechanisms through which differences are constructed and maintained. With our space, we create an accessible, non-judgmental, and inclusive environment for everyone regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, economic position, race, creed, age, national origin, physical ability, or mental ability. With our daily interactions, we foster respect and dignity among all people.

EXCELLENCE: We provide our audiences with unforgettable theatre experiences, and we give our artists and staff the resources they need to achieve the highest standards of excellence.

COMMUNITY: We believe that the theatre plays a vital role in the educational, social, and economic health of a community. We strive to be a positive force by encouraging collaboration and constructive dialogue among the various groups and individuals who make up our community.

After the Club Q shootings in The USA, I appreciate our safe Queer spaces in Canada. Buddies gives us quality theatre, performance art & entertainment for diverse Queer audiences and I appreciate it more than ever after 4 decades. It is such an important community hub.
This is a good venue for events as it's a large space when it's fully opened up. In most situations it's only the main area that's used so it does feel a bit cramped. They also still require the vaccine passport so make sure to have that available before you arrive, otherwise you'll end up being turned away. Masks are also required in certain areas of the venue.
The center of the woke theatre scene in Canada, you likely will hear sentences like "Is they coming?" and learn how to speak correctly as the M.C.s and performers will tell you how to do so. Current plays and performers highlight wokeness through the lens of queer theory with a strong focus on the exploration of the the hundred of kinds of sexualities discovered by queer theorists LBGT2QIA++++++ and their traumatic identity stories.
Lovely folks had such a great time also felt safe there going to the bathroom since it was a super nice all genders restroom which rarely get at venues super stoked to go to an event there again!!!!
New management is terrible. Incompetent, difficult to deal with, certainly not customer-service oriented. Not an exaggeration to characterize them as borderline hostile to rental clients. Something needs to change
So disappointed! First, the place looks old. Besides of that, music was not good, very few people there, but the worst thing was the drinks. They gave me a beer with a lemon and a long hair inside the lemon we stayed there for one hour or so.
Awesome place! Loved the show and the people
Old theatre, good for events but kind of small and has an awkward layout. Somewhat strange for accessibility.
I normally go to Buddies once a month for the Throb Party. Last Saturday June 11 I waited in line for a drink for almost 50 minutes. Missing 1/3 of my time there trying to have fun in line while other people just cut the line and get served first. Just two bartenders working on their own time. My suggestion is or hiring more staff or sell drink tickets at the entrance so the bartenders don’t have to waste time computing the sales. Don’t understand me wrong, I love going there but there’s no organization by the staff, I work as a bartender and waiting for that much for a drink at a party with less than 200 people is an absolute mess.
I went to a Friday night performance of the first stone. I didn't know what to expect. It was excellent!
