Brooklyn Park Library

Story

Brooklyn Park Library, located at 8500 W. Broadway Ave. opened at its new location in June 2016. It previously served patrons at 8600 Zane Avenue North in Brooklyn Park, since 1976. Designed by Setter, Leach and Lindstrom, at a cost of $814,651, the library is 15,100 square feet and was renovated in 1999. Bookmobile service was provided by Hennepin County Library previously.New Brooklyn Park LibraryIn November 2013, Hennepin County Board approved construction plans for a new library in Brooklyn Park at the northeast intersection of 85th Avenue and West Broadway. The new building, set to open in 2016, will more than double the size of the current space to better meet the growing community’s needs. Feedback from the public regarding their vision of the new library was received through a survey and a series of community meetings. Costs are budgeted at $23.5 million. Designed by Hammel Green and Abrahamson Architects & Engineers, and measuring 39,000 square feet, the new building will include a children’s interactive zone, a tech studio and several reading lounges. The children’s area has been designed in collaboration with Minnesota Children’s Museum and will invite families to linger and enjoy reading, learning and playing at the library. Patrons will be able to experience the library as living room for the community: it will include an open floor plan to facilitate interactions among patrons. The new library incorporates the State of Minnesota’s Sustainable Building Guidelines.

Beautiful place, great resources and lots of room. But REALLY DUMB to put in a kids play area - it gets really loud! Even in a private study room I can hear the kids yelling and playing. WHY would you put this in a library, where people come to work in relative quiet??

Love the newly remodeled library! It's fresh and clean. There are great educational and fun activities in the kid's area. Good place to take your young children for a free outing and take home a few new books to read!

It's a great location. It definitely has more of the modern social-spot feeling than the old and silent library feeling. Which I think is a matter of preference. Personally I prefer the big, old and quiet libraries but in this community it makes sense that it is place to access resources in the community rather than a quiet research nook.

The library is set up well, easy to find what you need, children's storytime is well organized, children's play area has a lot to offer. The problem: the parents and caregivers of the children here need to actually pay attention to their children. It looks like parents are way too busy with their adult conversation, I observed children screaming and crying while rolling on the floor and wandering around looking for their parents, children throwing the play items randomly and at anyone around, bully tactics to greedily grab another child's toys, utter chaos and non supervised time. This is not a quiet peaceful place. I don't think we will visit here again any time soon. Maybe when adults can learn to be adults and supervise their children.

Beautiful Lib in a great location, but TOO LOUD. I was in a study room and could clearly hear all the kids yelling, running and screaming. After talking with a staff member, he informed me libraries are turning away from the quieter way of operation and kids are encouraged to play and explore. Which I have no issue with. Also it's important to note the study room I was in, was right next to the kids section. I would suggest if libraries want to offer a more interactive and vocal approach specifically for kids... then to segregate the kids section... from the remainder of the library. Again beautiful lib but in my eyes poorly constructed to accommodate students/adults who need to study.
