Brit & Chips

About

Montreal's authentic Fish n' Chips/English Pastry Restaurant

Story

Fish n’ Chips is to England as apple pie is to America. For over a hundred years Fish n’ Chips has been the staple dish of the British people, an integral part of their identity.

In 1860, the first fish and chip shop was opened in London, deep-fried chips as a dish first appeared in Britain at about the same period. The modern fish-and-chip shop “CHIPPY” or “CHIPPER” in modern British slang originated in the United Kingdom. Fried-potato shops spreading south from Scotland merged with fried-fish shops spreading north from southern England and the Chip Shop was born. During World War II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Because of this Fish and Chips became a Household staple.

Brit & Chips is located in Montreal, it’s goal is to capture the best aspects of a traditional chippy and add some of the local flavour and style that Montreal isl specifically known for. The menu was created by some of Montreal’s pre-eminent experts in English Cuisine after a tireless trek through England, hunting down different recipes and ideas from the most renowned English Fish n’ Chips shops.

The result is an amazing amalgamation of the best that Britain has to offer with a little Quebecois spice.

Not the best. I always feel excited to go (cause fish and chips) but the batter is not the best (it's usually not crispy or tasty enough for my liking), the fish is a bit dry and the chips are meh. It's a nice casual place to eat, with a selection of beers and sodas. They have one gluten free batter which is nice. The portion size varies heavily on which fish you get. It was decent, service was a bit slow - the place is pretty small I think there was only one server. Small outdoor terrace. They also do catering and offered tofu for the gluten free / vegan option which was pretty good also.

Disappointed ...the haddock was stiff and tasteless. The cod was better. The fries didn't have any taste either, although big portion. The worst was the oil they use to fry their fish and fries... dark brown!!! When I commented the oil is old and needs to be changed, the guy said the oil is good. He further said they it once a week, compared to other places that change the oil only once a month!!!

Excellent food and ok service. The fish and chips was great (tried both the cod and the haddock). Best cod I ever had, and the haddock was great too. The only issue was the bathroom and cleanliness of the place. The bathroom was out right gross so I couldn't give 5 stars. It appears commonplace among places in Old Montreal. Still, they could clean it once in a while. The food was quick but they took a long time to get to us and to refill drinks. At the end of the day though, still excellent fish and chips. They do that one thing extremely well.

Firstly, they have an amazing staff. Very friendly and cordial. The menu is fairly simple. All my indecisiveness lead to picking the haddock and cod. The orders come with fries and beer as well. The food was served piping hot. Service was great. English and french fluent staff.
