This MLA in my opinion does not seem to care about the actual public. I am a disabled single mother, living in a building where second hand smoke entering my unit from adjacent units has been an issue for nearly three years. I have contacted Brendon Macguire’s office on several occasions and was connected to his administrative staff. I made a request that the MLA raise the issue of landlords being responsible to provide clean air in buildings were children live over a year ago. I have had no response as to how this issue has moved forward within the legislature. I am currently unable to stay in my home due to health and safety risks for my children and myself. My landlord had assured me that she would circulate a notice stating that smoking in the units of her building would be unacceptable and met with consequences. This has not been done. I feel that other than going to the tenancy board which I plan to do, speaking with this MLA would potentially give me more options, especially if he was willing to create a bill that states that landlords are legally responsible to ensure their residents are able to occupy their home while guaranteeing children have smoke free living spaces. This seems to me to be a human rights and a health and safety issue involving children. You can’t go and light up a cigarette and in a school, so why should children have to have second hand smoke drifting into their homes while they play and sleep? I urged Brendon Maguire to please contact me. I have left my contact information on his voicemail and would like resolution on this issue.
