Black Sheep
"Previously located on Dresen Row, Black Sheep was a word-of-mouth hole-in-the-wall until our recent expansion to the Brewery Market on Lower Water Street in early 2021. Known for doing things a little differently, line ups around the block for a table at Brunch, and the friendliest staff in Halifax. Our new location offers three times the space for guests to enjoy the same quality service and exceptional food. Our mission is to make awesome food and drink from scratch using quality, locally sourced ingredients. Our menu is globally inspired, yet approachable.Open for Brunch and Dinner, Wednesday through Sunday, every week."

Very much enjoyed Sunday brunch at Black Sheep. This was my first time at their new location and it’s such a lovely space. Besides the ambiance, the food was amazing. My girl had the Diner Breakfast and I had the Brisket Benny and we we’re both very happy with our choices. We both got Pink Grapefruit mimosas and we shared dessert as well. The tiramisu is probably the best I’ve ever had but the star of the whole experience had to be the pistachio cake. My mouth is watering thinking about it. It consisted of a delicious cake filled with blueberry compote, lemon curd on the plate and a pavlova meringue. Both desserts were amazing but the pistachio cake just had so many different elements that it was nice to have the variety of flavour throughout the dish. I look forward to our next brunch at Black Sheep.
Morgan was our server she was kind, friendly and amazing at her job. The food was absolutely phenomenal! We were visiting from Calgary, AB and it is so hard to find wonderful service and a thrilling experience, the Black Sheep was everything we were looking for and more! Not to mention we got into town late at night and it was hard to find any restaurants still open. Thank you for being open, available and the perfect spot for a bite to eat. We will definitely be visiting again next summer just so that we can go to the Black Sheep again!
We enjoyed lunch on the rooftop patio - very cool vibes and a great location. Caesars and grapefruit mimosas are both excellent. We split the Smoked Octopus and Lobster Ravioli - the Octopus is similar to a salad, light and refreshing. Highlight was definitely the Ravioli - sprinkled in black truffle - it stands out as one of the best dishes from our East Coast foodie adventures. Highly recommend this dish. Our server was lovely and offered great tourism recommendations.
Was craving a new brunch spot and I found it. I will preface this by saying it is not pub style, this is a classy place and offers a 5 star experience. The menu is unique and the food n drinks are gourmet. I got the banana bread french toast and my Brother got the regular style breakfast. The service is impeccable from the front of the house right to the back. Extremely accommodating. It is located inside the Brewery Market on Lower Water so was hustling n bustling with activity this Saturday. I cannot recommend this place enough and will def. be back to try the fish cakes next. Till then Black sheep. Sincerely, Your new fan
This restaurant is located in a historic building so the atmosphere and architecture is pretty neat. I also got a spot on the rooftop patio, which has great views of the street below. ... And that's all the good things I can say. I got the lobster ravioli and fish cake. The ravioli sheets were too thick and the sauce was too heavy. While the lobster filling was very generous, I could barely taste it because of how overwhelming the sauce was. The squid ink was a nice touch visually, but flavor-wise it had no impact. I struggled to like to anything about the fish cake. It tasted exactly like what you'd imagine a ball of fish to taste like. There was not enough sauce and it ended up being very dry. I wanted to like this place because of the cool building, but unfortunately that's all there is to it.
Excellent dining experience at Black Sheep. The Bouillabaisse was loaded with sea food, simply delicious. And the Lobster Ravioli was out of this world, a real show stopper. We also had the Beef Tartar and Oysters as appetizers. Both delicious. Oysters couldn’t be fresher, tasted like the ocean. The Beef Tartar was the best I’ve had in decades, leans more toward the Italian style rather than Montreal fashion. To finish it off, we had the Chocolate Hazelnut Torte, devilishly divine. Service was spectacular as well. Overall best dinner we’ve had in Halifax so far.
Good service and decent food. Cute ambiance. Price is reasonable especially at happy hour. 4 stars as everything we had was a tad on the salty side, which, if paired with drinks are not bad but by themselves definitely too much. Star of the evening was smoked octopus, quite enjoyable.
Had great seats on their patio and really enjoyed the service and atmosphere of the restaurant. The calamari and the octopus as entrees are both great choices. I had the lamb fettuccine which was amazing and the lobster ravioli was also great. The only problem with the lobster ravioli is that they only give you 7 or 8 of them from what I remember. They are quite stuffed but if you just have that plate you might still be hungry.
Service was wonderful. I wonder if I got the second or third tier cook as the food was less than desired based on the Google reviews I read before coming here. Chicken thighs were simply deep fried battered thighs with lettuce and pickles you would find at subway sandwich bar. Flavoring on chicken was good. Mild effort put into sides would have elevated the dish to next level. The lobster ravoloi was decent, pasta could have been cooked a bit longer, the dish didn't wow me as I've made tuna sandwiches with more flavor with mayo, mustard and salt and pepper. I'd recommend going across the street to the Italian restaurants as you will get better value for money with similar service. Unfortunate I was hoping for better here.
If I could do 2.5 stars, I would, but I’ll round up to 3. My husband and I had Black Sheep as #1 on our “must try” list for this trip after my best friend highly recommended it and said her and her friends went 3 times in their short time to Halifax when they were visiting because it was apparently so good. Well, it turns out they meant the brunch was amazing and unfortunately my husband and I came for dinner. After having such high expectations, we were quite disappointed. There wasn’t a huge variety on the menu and the prices are quite high for what you get. This was our most expensive meal on our trip and the least enjoyable. The cocktail I had was very refreshing in the heat wave, so I enjoyed that although it was mostly ice, but the food was just average. I had the lobster ravioli which was very unique and as pictured, it looked very well-presented and I loved that the ravioli shells were handmade, but for the price we paid, we wish it came with a little bit more than just 6 raviolis. I was not even close to being full after eating the ravioli. My husband ordered the soft shell crab and shrimp and he was not a big fan at all. The seafood itself was pretty good, but deep frying the crab with the shell on made it difficult to eat especially in the dark, and the grits and greens bok choy were completely flavourless and lacked salt. Unfortunately, based on this experience and the prices/portions, we will not be coming back, not even to try the brunch.
