Ordered: Guava Jerk chicken with plantain mild Oxtail Sorrel drink Chicken potato pattie pastry Haven't had Jamaican for a long time despite it being a childhood staple. This place was great. I don't remember sorrel, but it was wonderfully spicy like a chai tea -- each infrequent sip felt novel. Everything was really excellent. The jerk was an awesome low level spicy that was full of flavour instead of heat. The plantain was very dry like a bread instead of moist like I'm used to. Definitely looking forward to ordering again! ---- Ordered again and got the goat curry mild. It was delicious and not too spicy, but not as amazing as the jerk or oxtail.
We had been wanting to check this place out for a while, being fans of Caribbean food and all. The chicken roti was pretty good. Would love to see what they could do with a beef or boneless goat roti. Our boy gobbled down his Mac and cheese as well as some beans and rice. He also enjoyed the guava BBQ jerk chicken. The doubles disappeared so fast I didn’t even know we had ordered any. The salt fish fried baked sandwich was a hit. I’m biased towards roti and that was my favourite overall. Looking forward to the sorrel now. If you like this style of food, it’s worth trying out. Would recommend this place.
Been here two times now. Both times needed salt. The spice level is also pretty low and so I'd guess the hottest is closer to a medium level elsewhere. So overall, good but not great. Come here if you need to mix it up but don't go out of your way. I didn't give them a review the first time because they messed up my order. I asked for plantains, i got chickpeas in my roti. Second time, I asked for medium spicy, i got mild. So here's the updated review. Still needs salt.
I finally got a chance to try Barra Caribbean Cuisine at the International Village. The price are reasonable and service was good. Their Guava Jerk Chicken is insanely delicious. The portions are well prepared in a very generous way. Recommended.
Yummmmmmmy! Oh goodness, I’ve been looking for Doubles for some time now and I was not disappointed. These came on a yellow fry bread topped with chickpeas, like tacos. The only thing I’d change would be to mash the chickpeas a bit. They tended to roll off the dough. I like them they stay together and be less rollie polie. This is just an option and didn’t effect how lovely they tasted in my mouth.
This is what I paied almost 20 bucks for. Maybe the most expensive chicken leg I have had in last 20 years. More expensive than fine dining for sure. Taste was okay. Chicken leg was precooked and soggy. I prefer fresh cooked food. And for 20bucks I thought they at least would regrill the chicken. Nope, directly from the bin into the "plate". Despite the short comings, health standard seems to be okay.
Lots of traditional Caribbean dishes with a creative twist! Their guava-jerk chicken was unreal, loved the flavours and really well seasoned. Their macaroni pie and potato salad was also amazing. Friendly staff and big diverse menu for a smaller restaurant offering lots of Caribbean food and beverages, mostly Trini, Bajan and Jamaican. Wish I could give them 6 stars! Born and raised in Trinidad here, if you’re looking for a taste of the Caribbean in Vancouver, this is the place.
Friday afternoon, crazy amount of work. I look up at the clock and it is 3 pm hell no!. With the kitchen cold as the weather outside, it was time to bring out the trusted uber app. A couple of clicks and i was on my way to Jamaican flavor town. Ordered the doubles and a chicken roti to go. Man, the doubles dish was da bomb! Never ate anything like that before - delish! The Chicken roti not so exciting. It looked like it was made in the kitchens' of Waldorf Astoria. Very prim and proper, not messy and unapologetic like a roti should be. Would definitely order the doubles again.
Word of the day is Doubles! One of the many flavorful dishes available here. Bara does an amazing job of bringing authentic Caribbean food to Vancouver. I luckily have a few more items to try and I’m very excited for that. I’ve had the Mac and cheese, doubles, guava jerk chicken and chicken curry bowl and all were on point. The staff was very helpful with making suggestions for what I should try and knew the ingredients of all dishes to answer any questions I had. Even when there was a line it moved fast and you didn’t feel rushed when it was your turn to order. If you like Caribbean food I highly recommend it. Great to hit up before a movie too!
These doubles were stunning. So flavorful and the service was amazing. Super friendly. Will definitely go again for doubles and for the guava jerk chicken.
