Took my family here for a late afternoon lunch. The food quality was good. Xialoong boa had lots of soup, very good. Their drunken chicken was okay, but I had better. Overall, I would recommend to give them a try. They do have big menu and we only tried 3 items as it was a light lunch.
Decent portion sizes for the price. We ordered takeout and it was very well packed. The food was so flavourful and delicious. Maybe skip the sticky rice, and just an FYI the hot and sour soup has a few peanuts. Kind of strange to me, but I didn’t hate it. Overall, would eat again. Hot and sour soup with dumplings 8/10 Shanghai soup dumplings 10/10 Beef wrap 10/10 Sticky rice with pork floss 5/10 Shanghai pan fried pork buns 9/10 Crystal shrimp dumplings 9/10
Ordered near Lunar New years and received above and beyond service. We ordered the dandan noodles and the rice cake with shepherds purse and shredded pork. They included two tea drinks and a box of goodies with a coupon for free! It was a great surprise. The rice cake dish was good but I wish there were more of the veggies on it. The veggies bring flavor and with not much of it, then it just tastes like regular rice cakes. The dandan noodles were a huge portion. Good nutty flavor but I prefer a little more spicy.
Had to stop here after being away for meetings, craving for some food ‘ol Shanghai Chinese food. Couldn’t finish our portions so took them home. Tasty as ever. Prices have gone up but that’s true of everywhere was anyway. Cravings satisfied. Service was not consistent today though. Hence 4 of 5 stars.
After eating out at restaurant much less due to Covid-19, my family decided to give this restaurant a try. However, we regret coming here. The pineapple and chicken fried rice is oily and has only 3 pieces of pineapple. With pineapple in the name of the dish, this is very disappointing. After eating a bit of the unappetizing dish, I felt sick to my stomach. Although the shaolongbao/ steam dumplings had a thick skin, what I ate next made myself and family never want to come back again. The noodles with pork was the worst. The pork was too salty and the noodles were mediocre. Spend your money elsewhere. Don't make the same mistake. Not worth your time and money.
I was driving around Richmond with my friends on a Friday night looking for a place to eat, until we saw the inviting bright neon lights of “Baiyulan” which made me want to take a drive on the pacific coast highway…but that would have to wait because my friends and I were starving! As we walked into Baiyulan, we were greeted by a nice Chinese lady who took us to our seats. Based on what I have observed, the place was fairly clean however when I sat down I noticed my table had a bit of oyster sauce on it…not a big deal but it would’ve been nice if they gave that thing a good wipe before seating us there. We ordered some classic Chinese dishes which were supposedly “Shanghai” like the crispy Shanghai noodles, but I was told by my Hong Kong friend that it was just generic Chinese noodles which kinda made him upset as he was really looking forward to Shanghai exclusive food! That said, the noodles tasted great to me and so did the other dishes we ordered like the Kung Pao chicken, sweet and sour pork, and the pineapple chicken fried rice! They were surprisingly very generous with the pineapple pieces on the fried rice which I thought they might skimp on after reading a review about it here. Apart from our main dishes, we also ordered some pork pastry and of course Xiaolongbao. To me the best dish was definitely the Xiaolongbao, it was soft and juicy and the soup inside it was so delicious especially when mixed with a dash of vinegar. The portions for the dishes were also pretty good for a group of 4 grown men. We didn't get extremely full like we always do at hot pots which was good for a change - but we were all pretty satisfied. Overall, Baiyulan is a great Shanghainese place that is worth a try if you’re around Richmond area and want to avoid long lineups for seating.
One of my favorite Xiao Long Bao in town. The dishes are very authentic and give me the home cooking taste. We love the radish pastry, chicken in wine sauce and the cold noodles too.Food: 5/5
We come to Baiyulan for 4 dishes every single time, and for these it is worth the drive! Be sure to try their whole crab with salted egg rice cakes not on regular menu, it’s on their chef’s recommendation on banner outside their front entrance - $53 for about 2lbs best deal in town. Their turnip cake is also one of the best we’ve had. Their peikin duck 2 wraps option is hella good and such a good deal! Then there’s their salt and pepper fried squid beats most Taiwanese eats around! Their clam soup is pretty legit too. Definite will remain a regular here
The quality and service has declined. The group dinner I had here 2 years ago was much more enjoyable. The roasted tea meat was on the dry side and the pan fried buns were quite doughy. Only thing that was ok was the noodles and wonton.
Baiyulan is a small colourful restaurant offering Shanghai styled food. It’s one of the great places in Richmond to taste an ethnic food. Price is reasonable. Atmosphere is warm, especially when outside is windy, drizzling and leaves are falling in a chilly autumn.
