Avalon Animal Hospital— our heartbreaking experience nnLast night we brought our Shih Tzu to Avalon Animal Hospital after trying again and again to reach the emergency line — no one answered. When someone finally did, we spent another 15 minutes on the phone just trying to find out where to go and what to do while he was struggling for breath.nnWe paid for every test, every scan, every medication they recommended. We did everything right. We trusted their care.nnThey told my husband he had a heart murmur but was “stable”, that he could go home, that with medication he still had “plenty of life to live.”nThey discharged him around 12:30 a.m., still wheezing and weak.nnForty-five minutes later, he quietly curled up in my son’s car seat on the drive home and went to sleep.nHe never woke up.nnNot a single follow-up call today.nNo compassion.nNo one cared enough to even ask if he was still alive.nnRight now, instead of being curled up on our couch where he belongs, he’s lying in a storage tub wrapped in blankets — because Angel Paws can’t take him until Tuesday.nnOur little boy keeps asking, “Where is heaven?”nAnd “Why can’t he come back to play?” nnNo family should ever have to explain that to a child.nnWhere was the urgency when we called?nWhere was the caution before sending him home?nWhere is the accountability now?nnThey told us he’d be fine. They gave us false hope.nAnd then they sent him home to die.nnIf this is what emergency veterinary care looks like in Newfoundland, then no animal is safe.nnWe need more accessible, compassionate, and responsive emergency animal care in this province.nNo family should ever have to experience what we just did.nnHe deserved better.nWe all did.nThis province deserves better.nnBut, they filled there pockets said he was ok and discharged my baby to pass away on the way home. The outcome may have been the same, but to discharge him so uncomfortable. Where is the heart in this? He wasn’t ok.nnIf an animal was choking. You’re looking for guidance on what to do? You call EMS for a human they’ll guide you through rapidly. Animals you wait on hold for 25 minutes if you get through that fast you’re lucky. Our animals deserve rapid response to guide pet owners. Just like humans.nThanks for discharging our baby. And letting him pass on my son’s car seat. And can’t forget the $1200 bill for the support.
I have only had one personal experience with this vet hospital. It was very comforting and positive despite losing a cat that was a foster to adopt.nnThe staff were patient with me as I had requested updates throughout the day. I was extremely anxious to get her home. The one thing I wish was better was the line of communication. We were told to contact the SPCA if we wanted to receive any information or updates throughout the day of Pumpkin's surgery.nnIt was nice that the staff provided me with updates directly when they technically didn't have to. As my partner and I were fostering to adopt, we had seen Pumpkin as our own and wanted to be there for her as best as we could.nnAfter we had lost her, the doctor who operated on her had turned his vehicle around and came back to see us at the hospital later that evening, offering his condolences. It was a very appreciated and heartfelt gesture that meant a lot to us. It meant we were able to get some further insight as to what went wrong during her operation, and how she spent her final moments.nnAs someone who doesn't frequent this location due to having the animals registered with a different hospital, the staff are very pleasant and positive in their interactions and they all care deeply about the pets under their wing.
Our new puppy was treated as an emergency. Diagnosed with nasal issues and determined needed corrective surgery. It was completed by a vet at this hospital 2 days later. She developed severe issues requiring multiple ER visits and admissions and second surgery to correct which had a greater than 90% chance of failure. She did do well, but the expense of which my portion was over $6000 and the fear we would have to put down our 3 month old puppy was traumatic. I reached out to this clinic , was told they were investigating but 5 months later no one has ever contacted me. I would give a -5 rating if I could.
I brought my cat in Wednesday past because she was sick and not eating. She saw Dr. Ashley Harvey and I can not say enough good things about this vet. Dr. Harvey was very honest and upfront while showing compassion, it turns out my cat had fatty liver disease. Dr. Harvey came back with blood work results and took the time to go over everything in detail with me and really helped me understand the disease my cat has and the treatment she needs to recover. Her assistant who was also very sweet and compassionate called me the following morning to check how my cat was doing and took lots of notes, you can really tell they care. Thank you so much Dr. Harvey, her assistant and the rest of the staff, I can't thank you guys enough.
I have been going there for about 6 years now and love it. I have never had a vet clinic make me feel like they cared about our fur babies so much, as well as the compassion I have experienced during very difficult times! No matter who I've seen there it is always a positive experience from beginning to end. I highly recommend avalon animal hospital for your fur family
