Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site

About

Go back to a time when COAL WAS KING!

Story

The Atlas Coal Mine was the last of 139 mines that operated in the Drumheller Valley from 1911 to 1979. Today it is open for tours and visitors are allowed to explore the last wooden tipple in Canada, don caps and lamps and head underground, listen to the ghostly silence of a once busy washhouse, stroll around the authentic historic landscape and even catch a ride on a 1936 Mancha Mine locomotive.

A fun and interesting experience for families with kids off all ages and adults alike. Older kids and adults can visit the mine and take the non-PG tour, while kids can enjoy a train ride and kid friendly tour outside the mine. Really interesting, very reasonable price, and an valuable piece of Canadian history. If you're in the area this is one place you should not miss.

Best place ever. So many amazing things to do. The best is climbing to the top of the Tipple! You can ride a coal cart train. Learn all about the coal history in the area, even tour underground in the mine. Loved everything here!

5 Star Plus!!! I went down to Drumheller the last week of June with no intention of going to see the Atlas Coal Mine. However, with some time to spare I decided to take it in. The best tour I have ever been on. Emily Fletcher was amazing. She obviously knows all her facts and listening to her actually made you feel like you were living it. Thank you Emily. You are an extremely talented lady and I hope Atlas realizes how lucky they are to have you working for them. Thanks again.

One of the best experiences of my life, this place is a true form of our heritage here in this province and the city of Drumheller. The tour of the tipple and train ride was very informative and will be back to do the actual tour of the mine.
