Argo Bookshop

About

Argo Bookshop is Montreal's oldest English-language bookstore, and a fine one at that: "Where Montreal's Readers and Writers Gather"

Story

Argo Bookshop was founded by Mr. John George in 1966 on the south side of Ste-Catherine St. West, right across from where it now sits. After a fire the following year, the shop relocated to its new present spot. Business was slow in the first years of the Argo, but Mr. George deeply cared for his store, and the community of readers that grew around it, so he kept to it. Mr. George became ill in the fall of 2005, but continued to work full time up until the morning of his admission to hospital in January of 2006.

After passing through the hands of a number of owners, the shop has been newly renovated as of June 2017. The new management continues to believe in the example set by Mr. George in serving the readers and writers of Montreal. We provide a well-curated selection of fiction and non-fiction books, a welcoming place to sit, read, and chat, and host events regularly, including readings, book clubs, write-ins, and more. Located in the heart of the city, we aim to provide a community space for readers of all interests and ages.

"Argo Bookshop was founded by Mr. John George in 1966 on the south side of Ste-Catherine St. West. After a fire the following year, the shop relocated across the street to 1915 Ste-Catherine West. Business was slow at first, but Mr. George deeply cared for his store and the community of readers that grew around it, so he kept to it, operating the store until his passing in 2006.In October 2021, the Argo again moved, anchoring itself at 1841-A Ste-Catherine Ouest, a half block east of its home for 52 years. We continue to believe in the example set by Mr. George. We provide a well-curated book selection, a welcoming place to read and chat, and host events regularly. Cute bookstore, however I don’t understand the good comments about the service None of the sellers answered me when I said “hi” when I arrived, they barely looked at me actually. They didn’t ask me if I needed help we were only two customers and I didn’t have any goodbye either. I felt I was wearing an invisible cape, good job
The curation at this bookshop is unreal. Their selection is varied and the staff are super friendly. I get most of my books second-hand but I can't resist coming here for first-hand books on a regular basis!!
Great local bookstore with a very serious and dedicated staff. Why order on Amazon - support local sellers!
The oldest indie Anglo bookstore in Montreal. New location is big, bright & inviting. I want all the books!
Cute, carefully selected books. Im not big on reading, but I got so excited when I found this hidden gem. So many good finds about topics that are actually important and relevant to today's societal issues. Yayyyyy. Also, they support so many local writers! Love that.
As a Concordia student, I found this store on a whim after my class ended. Now, I go almost every week and most times, I bring a book home with me. The staff is extremely nice and though the bookstore might be small, there are plenty of books to choose from. Also, Willy the dog is an added bonus.
I can find books here that I can't find elsewhere, I leave with something ok, many somethings each time I visit. It's a lovely spot.
Lovely collection and friendly staff. If they don't have a book you want, they will happily order it for you. They also ship internationally! ^_^ Also, I love their new location - it's a clean, bright space I could spend hours in.
Cozy book shop with small but impeccable! selection of fiction and non-fiction books. There’s lots of queer and feminist selections as well! Will visit here whenever I come to MTL :
A really impressive, diverse selection of books. I went for a browse but didn't buy anything because it was raining outside and didn't want to get my books wet, but I'll be back because they had a lot of really interesting books I haven't seen anywhere else.
