Applecross Veterinary Hospital

About

Promoting animal health through preventive and modern veterinary medicine.

Story

At Applecross Veterinary Hospital we believe in promoting animal health through preventive and modern veterinary medicine. We are constantly working to to give your pet the best possible care. We are a full service veterinary hospital, some of our services include:

Wellness Plans
A Wellness Plan is a group of preventive medicine products and services offered to our clients at a discounted rate and billed monthly. This falls under our belief that preventive medicine will help prevent future disease, or allow for earlier treatment of existing or developing disease. For example: annual blood work, dental cleanings, etc.

Dental Suite

Your pet’s teeth are an integral part of his or her overall health. Teeth require yearly cleaning, and this cleaning can greatly increase the life span and quality of life of your pet. Unlike us, pets are not happy to open their mouths for a cleaning and require a full anaesthesia in order to have their teeth properly cleaned and examined. We will scale the teeth to remove tartar and plaque build-up and polish them to smooth the enamel. This is done to remove small wear marks which can encourage the development of plaque and tartar.

Onsite Laboratory

We are proud to offer many on site laboratory services. This allows our doctors to quickly assess diagnostics to help better form a treatment plan for our sick patients. We are also able to offer lab services for our elderly patients who come in for their yearly vaccinations. Routine testing for blood counts and chemistries are done with state-of-the art equipment in the hospital and are available within hours.

Among the laboratory services offered:
◦Feline leukemia & FIV testing
◦Fecal floatation
◦Urinalysis and microscopic examination of urine
◦Complete blood counts
◦Blood chemistry and electrolytes
◦Cytology (microscopic examination of cells) of the skin and ears
◦Culture and sensitivity
◦Diabetes diagnosis and control
◦Hormone levels, such as thyroid, cortisol, and progesterone
◦Histology (microscopic examination of tumor cells)
◦Testing for parasites such as giardia

Please ask our staff about our geriatric panels, pre-aesthetic panels, and paediatric panels. We use several out of the clinic laboratories for services that we can not offer in order to provide the best care possible. These other test results are usually available within 24 hours.

Personalized Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important component of your pet’s wellness and will help prevent serious illnesses from developing. After a consultation with you on your pets life style and a thorough an examination of your pet our veterinarians will determine an appropriate vaccines protocol. If you are traveling with your pet, please ensure that we are aware of where you are traveling to so that we can ensure your pet is covered for any diseases they may encounter at your travel destination.

Radiology

Our on-site X-ray equipment is helpful for examining masses, tumors, and potential obstructions, detecting cat or dog arthritis, and can discover hidden problems that may warrant further investigation.

Surgery

Our special combination of technology and know-how ensures that the animals we care for undergo only the safest and most effective surgery we can provide. With this in mind, we begin every surgery consultation with a thorough physical exam—including blood work—to determine whether your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia and to undergo surgery at the outset. From here, we will administer any necessary pre-surgerical medications and will continue to monitor and care for your animal’s condition post-operatively as needed.
After Hours Service

Emergencies

Emergencies never happen when you expect them, and they never seem to happen during the doctor’s office hours. 24 hour emergency service is provided through the small animal emergency clinic at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital (250) 933-0913.

My dog Poppy went in for booster the other week and they were amazing! Poppy has a lot of anxiety when she goes in but they made it super comfortable for her and the receptionist Jade was also amazing! Definitely recommend going to this vet
My 13 year old Shih Tzu, Keeta, stopped eating for three days, didn’t want to go for walks, was very lethargic and wanted to sleep most of the time. Not at all herself. I’m new to Nanaimo so didn’t have a vet yet. But the reviews and website looked like a suitable place. So I called Applecross Tuesday morning as soon as they opened and they fit me in 2 hours later. I saw Dr. Westworth who Took xrays and tested her blood on-site in the hospital so I had the results within about an hour. The results showed she was severely anemic, Dr Westworth wanted to find out if Keeta’s organs we’re affected so she arranged for me to go to Victoria for an ultrasound at a hospital there that same day. It became clear with all the results from these test that she had an autoimmune issue going on. By the next morning Dr. Westworth had Keeta admitted to the hospital and was able to administer Cortizone treatment and an IV to hydrate her as well as other necessary medications. Tuesday, the day I brought Keeta to the vet I wasn’t sure if she was going to survive because she was so anemic and lethargic. Today is Friday of the same week, this sassy little Shih Tzu appears to be acting back to her normal self! Thank you so much Dr. Westworth for taking action so quickly to get Keeta the tests she needed in order for her to recover so quickly. I wish I had remembered the names to some of the staff that work there as well, they took such incredible care of Keeta and I am forever grateful! Thank you Apple cross and thank you Dr. Wesworth!
Very pleasant and helpful on the phone. Was put on a cancellation list and got called right away. I like how the Dr. gave me a price for each procedure first and she was very thorough with my dogs check up. She did not recommend anything that she didn’t feel was urgent. This is not my regular vet we live out of province. Dr. said she would follow up in a few days. Overall a very good experience
I've had good experiences here with my dog and those I've referred have had good experiences. I tend to find they don't over do procedures just to bloat the bill, they stay honest and on task. Staff is friendly and always try to accommodate emergencies when possible. Location and parking is a plus as well.
Very compassionate individuals work here. Our sweet crazy kitten was hit by a car and they were very consoling, calm and helpful. Highly recommend all the services offered for cremation and paw prints.
I love these people. Very gentle, understanding, and reasonable. I appreciate that they really do what's best for the animal, and are willing to educate rather than pass judgement. Nine years of visiting bad vets throughout Nanaimo, and I finally found a place where I feel comfortable bringing my furbabies.
Went in here 2018 with my cat who had a lump on her chin. Vet said " well it could be one of 5 different reasons but since you're from Vancouver, why don't you just take her to your vet there" I thought ok, odd thing to say. But ill leave then. Well the shock to find out I had to pay $95.00 for that nugget of wisdom! 5 mins. Seriously , look for a caring vet ! Now that I live here, I have managed to do that. In Vancouver that kind of consultation would have been free period.
The receptionist at this clinic is very unhelpful or just not educated in phone etiquette. I phoned to enquire about a particular brand of kitten food and was told abruptly "We only carry veterinary grade" i asked again if they may have something they could recommend and again "We only carry...." Has she assumed that i just do not want to pay the price?? Very disappointing customer service.
Applecross was super amazing with me and my doggo Bugsie. They were very understanding and super helpful with all questions and concerns I had. Bugsie is a 5lb. Chihuahua and he gets super super cold, so I brought him in with a heated blanket and they kept him nice and warm for me, no questions asked. Usually Bugsie comes back a little sad, cold and disoriented from vet appointments, but this time he looked happy, warm, and content. It just felt so much better after appointments with Applecross. I highly recommend this place.
