Located near the South Edmonton Common area, this modern-style restaurant offers a HUGE menu with a variety of Chinese and global dishes. However, depending on when you visit they can be out of many menu items when you try to order. I have been here on two separate occasions, and in terms of service, I definitely think it could have been better. I found that they really liked to upsell random expensive dishes when you ask what tastes great or what is popular. Also, considering there are no pictures or detailed dish descriptors it would have been nice for them to tell you what is being dropped off at the table. We ordered a plethora of items so I feel like I have a good sense of the menu and what they have to offer. I tried the Spring rolls, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spare Ribs with Garlic & Chilis, BBQ Pork, Special Fried Rice, Fried Rice with Black Truffle & Minced Beef, Curry Beef Brisket, Broccoli & Garlic, Crispy Prawn Balls, and BBQ/Peking Duck. One thing I love about this place is that the portions are huge, and are totally meant for sharing. To highlight some of my absolute favourite dishes and dishes I totally recommend are: Spare Ribs with Garlic & Chilis, Curry Beef Brisket, and Roasted/Peaking Duck the sauce on the side is amazing. The fact that they even offer peaking duck alone is a reason for you to check this place out. Some dishes I was not a fan of were: Fried Rice with Black Truffle & Minced Beef, BBQ Pork it was dry Sweet and Sour Pork, and the Crispy Prawn Balls. I specifically would not recommend the Sweet and Sour Pork and the Crispy Prawn Balls as they were rather expensive and not anything special. Sure they were nicely plated, but it had an extremely poor protein to fried dough ratio lol. Overall though, this is a good place to bring a group friends and family for a large and tasty Chinese meal, especially when seated at the lazy susan tables! With careful consideration of your desired menu items, you are bound to leave with full and happy yummy!
Used to be great, but looks like they came under new management. The menu has been trimmed down and is a shadow of its former self. Bring back the old menu with the great variety of dishes. Food quality went down some as well, most notably the BBQ pork dish. The taste is off and the texture of the meat is a weird kind of chewy; it’s no longer caramelized on the outside and tender on the inside. Miss the old menu.
We quite enjoyed our meal here. We had the shredded beef with black bean sauce which was actually very good. The sauce was quite delicious but there wasn't much meat mostly vegetables. We also had the garlic gai lan which were ok but not my favorite. The garlic flavor was not very strong and some tasted a bit burnt. Our final dish was the sweet and sour pork and that one was also very good. They do give tea but I actually burnt my hand trying to move the cup from one side of the table. The tea was extremely hot and the cup they used was glass which obviously got super hot. Overall we would go back to try some more dishes.
The food is good and very flavourful. We ordered the Christmas special meal. I gave the cafe an okay score because the holiday Christmas meal was tasty and each dish had an unique flavor. To start the meal was fish maw soup. The soup was good. Next dish is roasted duck was good with crispy skin and sauce to dip. Roast pork belly was good with crispy skin and beautifully presented compare to Chinatown BBQ house where they cut the roast pork haphazardly. Though some pieces were burnt and give that bitter taste. The lobster with fresh noodles. It was good and the cream sauce is not goopy. The noodles was fresh and has a good bite to it. Deep fried pork was good. The batter was crispy and fresh. Fish fins was not bad. Basically you just suck on the skin and collagen. Next dish was deep fried wantons. The wantons was crispy and that wedge of orange help brightens and cuts the grease from the wantons. The last dish is sui choi cabbage that looks like soup ?. The broth was good with the soft cabbage. It is not greasy. This meal does not come with noodles nor rice. Most of the dishes would go well with a bowl of white rice. Dessert is mango pudding. As I have been to 852 Hong Kong Cafe numerous times, the pudding is good. However I cannot give it any higher score as the portion in the dish was really small for $250 Christmas meal had 6 dishes but we ordered 2 more dishes. You are better off buying the set menu for x amount of people like 6 or 8 wo choi 6 or 8 people set menu. Set menus comes with rice. After the meal, I still feel hungry after the meal. The score reflects on the Christmas meal. If it was the set menu or other dishes on the menu then I would give the restaurant a higher score and increase it by 1 star.
Very good taste! Please plan ahead about 15-30 minutes for possible lineup. The ClayPot Rice is a must-try! It’s worthy to wait for it being cooked and ready to serve for about half an hour! The MilkTea is also very tasty! Overall great!
Order claypot rice with fish combo for lunch, comes with a soup and veggie. My friend ordered another claypot rice combo with chicken and chinese sausage. Both tasted really good and can justify the price.
Great food and very quick service! ① HongKong Styke Curry Beef Pork wonton/ BBQ Pork Noodle ③ House Special Fried Rice Mango Parfait ① ③ I was absolutely in loooove with the curry. The curry sauce was super delicious and the beef so so tender. You know it’s good when it comes right off the bone! I’ve never had Chinese curry and this was a great introduction to it! When I order wonton I usually just get it in plain soup but tried out something a little new this time. Really enjoyed it almost didn’t leave room for the main. This is very filling wonton soup. I have yet to come across a Chinese restaurant that did not make the house fried rice really good! This was no exception. I believe this is Yangzhou inspired. The mango pieces were a little too cold for my sensitive teeth but it was a nice way to end the meal. Very light, a little sweet and delicious
Expensive, extremely small portion dishes. Not up to standard. BBQ goose is so dry and salty. $22 veg is so wet Baked pork chop rice is wet, the fried rice base is soggy, no cheese, can't tell is been baked Fried rice is ok, rice is ok, no much chicken for the fried rice at all, tasteless Milk tea is ok, can tell is from old tea Clams standard, not spicy, a bit dried and nothing stands out
I've tried a couple of other HK style cafes since moving to Edmonton from Scarborough east end of Toronto, an area known for having some very solid HK style cafes. This place is the best I've tried so far in the city On my first visit I ordered the Baked Seafood Cheese Alfredo Casserole with Spaghetti and a cold HK Milk Tea. Both were very good! The casserole dish had ample amount of seafood, so even though it is priced higher than places I'm used to in Toronto, it was well worth the price. Would recommend if you're missing the comfort of classic HK style cuisine!
Tasty HK style cafe with huge menu. Every table is partitioned off with a barrier for a safe dining experience. Noodles were great, the meat and spaghetti was good but the black pepper sauce was only mediocre.
