This place serves a DIY do it yourself hot soup bowl. Essentially you grab a giant bowl and fill it with all the toppings you want to eat in your soup like meats, veggies, fish balls, tofu, noodles, etc. They weigh your toppings and charge you by weight. Then, you pick a soup and they cook your toppings in it. Afterwards, you add sauces like sesame and garlic sauce and green onions and cilantro yourself. It tastes like most typical hot pots with a rich spicy broth and this place is more of a fast food hot pot kinda thing. Though I would say it's a bit pricy for what you get. My bowl as pictured cost $20.00 which can also get you a nice sushi lunch or dinner set in the area.
Food: 4.5 Soup base is excellent! I wish they'd have fresh soup base for sale. Has a variety of tripe, duck's blood curd, pork intestines etc. But veggie and mushroom options are a bit limited, which would suit very well with the non-spicy soup so .5 off for this. Service and environment: 4.5 I didn't know it's all serve-yourself kind of style so I was lost at first waiting to be seated. You also need to pick up your food cuz you get to choose the sauces and add-on too. Service attitude was good that the waitress added new items and cleaned up tables promptly. For the safety during covid, I wish the spoons and chopsticks were packed individually than displayed to all customers. Washroom was clean and easy parking in the plaza. Price: $-$$ I paid $38 but portion was enough for 2 meals. Not cheap for sure but okay for the taste.
i have been coming here with my family for some.time. It has been our favorite place for malatang. It's cheap and tastes good. However it changed everything after today, it qas about 5pm. Its not about their food quality. One lady here I never seen her before today Nov 7 2022. She was a bit rude from the begining but wasn't so much. She made her face whenever ask her something like small bowls or forks. Anyway we were just eating our food. Things got weird when two minors came in to order food without being able to speak.Chinese. Kids ordered pickup through online however, kids wanted to eat in the restaurant instead since it takes more.than a hour back to their home. so asked the lady if they could eat at the table, which was refused loud and clear without hesitation. I stepped in asking if she could give them a break since they are far from home. She just kept on saying no and she won't allow them to eat there as they ordered pickup. Then turned her back to me didn't response after. What a charming lady. I won't come back here again Pity that I lost one of favorite spots. I don't know if she is the owner or new employee there. Screw it. No respect for customers. They are kids for god sake.
The soup was so flavorful and the price is also reasonable. You will get lots of rice for $2!! Must try when you go to Richmond. The staffs are friendly and the store is clean :
This is a very fun place to eat! You can choose what you want in your soup and they'll weigh according to price. The soup was also really fulfilling and delicious, so I will be back!
The first and last time. I’m so disappointed with the base soup, it tastes like hot salty water. Food is a little pricey.
I love the malatang concept since I love choosing what I want. I thought the service was really good. The lady was alone but she was quick to cook our food. Very friendly and helpful too. Food was also really yummy, I got mild spice and it’s a true mild, coming from someone who can’t take spice. You can also add more chili oil if you want if more spicy. A side note, the washroom is kind of strange because there are two toilets beside each other without stalls and I couldn’t get the door to lock so that was weird.
My favourite Malatang in Richmond, fresh ingredients and best soup overall. You will choose the veges, meats and soup base, then takes 10 mins to cook. There's also extra sauce available, garlic, chilli oil, spring onion, sesame oil, vinegar, You can add on by yourself. And easy to park too, right next to the pricesmart.
It’s very tasty but kinda pricey for what it is highly recommend if you’re in Richmond and can’t think of anything to eat, this will be your place
Very clean place and very nice service!!! The flavour of the soup was amazing!!!
